  • terrible body roll...

lately ive noticed my body roll got really bad... i mean, really bad

what controls the body roll, i know i have something wrong with my suspension but im not sure what.

when i turn it feels like im gonna be ejected out of my car, its pretty rediculous.
and when i just take turns i can feel the back end go side to side, it handled much better before but i really dont know much about suspension, or how much it will cost.

what would be wrong, what should i replace it with.

check your sway bars would be my best bet. Is the ride itself bad? or just turning? what i mean is do your shocks still seem to be absorbing things fine and not bouncing too much and your springs all seem to be fine? If they seem fine then i'd def. check the swaybars

Before I started thrashing around replacing things (or changing things) I'd want to know what's wrong. It sounds like you're saying this is a new problem that came on suddenly?

This sounds like time for a pro to check the car out.

Could it be that: The shocks are worn out, the front swaybar is broken, the Panhard rod is broken? Or something strange, like a suspension arm mount?

      I'd go to a pro.

the ride is good, i think the shocks are still ok..

the thing is, it did come up suddenly.. but im not sure what exactly the

        sway bar
        pan hard bar
        stb bar
        lca's
        etc. etc.

        what are all their functions?

I could easily do this myself, i am going to school to be a mechanic ( motorcycle ) but.... i live in an apartment complex in fl, and normally back home i have all my tools, jacks, stands etc...

and taking it to a pro is like a kick in the balls.. i would at least first like to get an idea of what could be wrong.

It probably sounds vague... im sure, but any help would be great.

also,, is there something in the front suspension that will affect your alignment?
Say something broke, ive been needing to get an alignment on the front end but i figured that was from something else.

also ive noticed if i slam the throttle really hard, on dry pavement i feel my driveshaft (possibly) hit right behind the front seats on the center where the driveshaft is.. like something in the rear end shifts cuz of a possibly broken peice and the ds is jumping around.

v6bob knows his stuff. being that it came suddenly, i wouldnt think it'd be worn shocks, im thinking for of something broke. sway bar's have alot to do with the way the turn feels/handles in the turns ( more front then back i belive ) but shock and springs play an important roll too. how many miles are on every? did you recently take it off-roading or anything?

LOL, No, i like to keep it on the road...
              never been offroading.

i can tell the shocks and springs are ok for the mostpart, i have a strong feeling its the sway bar's... but possibly other things.

115k miles shocks were replaced right b4 i bought it @ the dealership.

I don't mean to be unkind, but if you don't know what all those things do, it's going to be hard for you to figure out the problem. To say nothing of not having your tools.

For example, the Panhard rod is the _only thing_ that locates your rear axle side to side. If it's loose or a bushing is going or it's cracked and about ready to fall apart; it could cause what you're feeling. If that's the case and the something wrong lets go entirely, you'll crash.

The front suspension is another possibility, but less likely. The front sway doesn't affect the alignment, but, if it's broken it could cause those symptoms.

But it could be a lot of things. Honestly, it's time for a pro, before something maybe lets loose altogether. Personally, I might get the car towed, rather than risk driving it.

                    Re: terrible body roll...

I'd check the endlinks and stock mounting brackets for the front swaybar first for the excessive roll problem. Worn out shocks can cause excessive bodyroll as well, but not sure how suddenly they go from good to bad. The shocks on my camaro were junk whenever I got it at 67k miles. The shock were so bad the rear wheel wells rubbed on the tires sidewall when cornering hard. Worn out rear shocks are easy to tell - a noticeable bump in the road at high speed (70mph+) will bottom out your rear suspension, making a loud noise in the trunk area which you can also feel.

Like V6bob said, the panhard rod is what locates the axle laterally. If it's bent, broken, or the bushings are worn out the rear end could shift excessively around side-to-side some when turning making the rear unstable. Might as well upgrade to a tubular panhard rod (adjustable if you want to fine tune side-to-side distances for wider wheels) if the stock one has a problem.

                      Re: terrible body roll...

Thanks guys for the help, V6bob.. i took my car to a pro, paid $19.00 to have my car 'inspected' ( which means they lift the car up and tell me to come take a look ) well once the car was in the air i knew what all the parts were.. & the tech also had an F-body so he helped me out :)

                      Verdict : broken sway bar!

                      The endlink was broken:

Sorry crappy IMG quality, cam phone ftl.

                      My panhard was fine...
the Upper side though was bent, cant tell if it was suppose to be like that so.... someone might.

& as for the 'thumping' ive heard occasionally... i had them check out the rear tranny mount and it's still in tact, but its torn a little, said its ok for now but i should look into replacing it sometime soon.
He said it could also be the carrier bearing in the 2 peice driveshaft.. he said they are worthless.

                      Thanks again!
