  • Manual Rack and Pinion

I've been looking for some info on converting to manual rack and pinion and am coming up short. I know the basics but can anybody tell me how much of a diffrence there would be in going from power to manual rack and pinion? I'm looking to make the car lighter and faster so this is an obvious choice so long as the change won't effect my daily driving ability. Any links people can give me would be appreciated. Thanks all.

I'm just taking a guess here:
I think its like 30 lbs of savings for like $300-$350
so I'm saying its not that great

if its a race car only... maybe

if it's a daily driver... not worth it

The main thing with a manual rack is that you are going to save a little weight and that you will also have better steering feel. The boosting from the power steering system is going to dampen out certain things from the road, both good and bad, you'll have to make sure the replacement has appropriate kickback valving, etc. The weight you save is basically cutting out your fluids, hoses, reservoir, and pump. You would also need a blank idler pulley to fit on the accessory belt, which I presume means fabrication.
If you are looking for a weight savings, I would strongly suggest elsewhere. If you are looking to upgrade your rack, I would suggest going to a v8 rack. If you have questions on that route, let me know.

for a DD, you are going in the wrong direction. These guys are "steering" you in the right direction :)
