  • Remedial question on suspension mods...

Well, my remideial question of the week is as follows:

Here is the scenario, I am driving along the interstate and taking an exit ramp. The ramp is a circular ramp with a gradual decline. The off ramp is also a bit worn with bump, holes, etc...While making the turn at the posted speed (35mph) I notice that as I hit a bump in the road, the car feels as though I am sliding a bit. Not so much that I feel like I am loosing control, but enough to be noticed and aware of.
Would modifiing my suspension help get rid of this "sway" or loose feeling as I drive over these bumps in the road?
If so, what type of mods should I consider making?

As always, thanks for your time and input!

it is probably a normal thing. remember, you car is wanting to keep going straight, when you hit the bump, the wheels momentarily come off the ground and keep going straight. so, when you hit the bump, your car really is sliding, i don't know how to alter your suspension to fix it.

_First_ thing to consider is shocks. If yours have >50K miles on them they're a likely culprit.

This will always happen a little with a live axle car. Good shocks can lessen it, bad will increase it. Panhard rod, chassis stiffness, and worn suspension bushings can also be a factor, but the shocks are by far the place to start. Swaybars aren't a factor in this.

I agree with Bob. A good set of shocks will help keep your rubber on the ground over rough surfaces.

I went ahead and rebuilt my front end when installing struts, springs, sway bars, and polyurethane bushings; and found several front end parts that were wore out like the tie rods and ball joints. It drives like a different car. If you can put your car on a lift, you can make sure all of your font end parts are tight.
