  • rotors?

I replace my front pads last summer and noticed and angled wear on my driver brake pad. I took apart the caliper and cleaned it real well. It seemed to be fine and I forgot about it. Well this morning I was putting air in tire and noticed a very noticable groove from the "warning tab" on the pad. I looked at pad and it is doing the same thing again. I'm curious to know the type of rotor anyone suggest. I looked up on ebay and found:
    R1 concepts
    x4 Rotors
    v12 motorsports
    Suzuka
    SP Performance
    Grip Force
    Pro stop

Any one have horror stories of any of these brands or recommend any of them. I just bought a house and can't really afford more than 125ish with shipping. I still have to think about pads and new calipers also. Not to mention I NEED new tires. When the money goes out, it really goes out. Any help on rotors, would be helpful. I have not even started to look into calipers or pads so all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

    Re: rotors?

Just use stock replacement rotors (autozone/Oreilly's) for $20-$30 each and good quality pads (Hawk HPS). That will cost you around $125 and be just as good as those other rotors. All those other rotors are for looks more than performance, they won't help you stop better or reduce fade any better than stock replacement rotors.

      Re: rotors?

If your brake pads are wearing unevenly, you need to look at your calipers.

      Either:
      - The caliper mounting brackets are bent
      - The caliper slide pins are bent
      - The slide pins aren't properly lubed and are binding
      - The caliper is spread
      - Something isn't bolted in correctly (debris making surfaces not flush, etc)

You need to find out where the misalignment is coming from before dropping money into a new set of pads and rotors that will also wear unevenly regardless of brand.

        Re: rotors?

 Did you remove the caliper pistons, remove the corrosion, and replace the seals/boots?

I have the same problem on the driver right side. :( Damn those crappy Austrailian brakes (Holden Designed) with the 2 piston calipars are garbage! Will probably have to replace the caliper.

Talked to a couple French guys a couple of years ago about the cars that Holden races and they told me that they are famous for poor brakes. I believe it because we have that crap in our cars and so far I'm not impressed!

            Thanks Niko,
How long have you had them? Those were actually the ones I was looking at but I was hoping someone on here has had some experience withany of them so I could have something to go on.

            Thanks zlexiss and CDNFB,
I took apart the sliders and cleaned and lubed them real well when I changed the pads last summer but I did not replace any seals or boots. I was planning on buying to calipers too. I'm just buying all the parts over the next few weeks and then change them all out at once.

had em on there about 7 months, no problem, with some good pads they stop like a dime...sometimes my abs kicks in when im only braking moderately hard(like if im on the highway and i need to slow down cuz i see cops) but the stopping power in unbelievable compared to my stock warped rotors...100% worth the $100

Yea, I had already went there and had a list of ALL the tires that would fit, speed ratings, and their prices. I ended up buying 4 of the Kumho ECSTA AST's this morning. I got the 245/50HR16's. They were 60 a piece and after next day shipping to goodyear (where they'll be installed) it was $285. There a high perf. all-season tire as my bird is my only car now. They have 6.5mm shorter sidewalls tahn stock but I'm sure it will be ok. Right now I'm running Cooper Cobras with a 225/60 and that is 6mm too big which is a problem. When I turn as far as possible the front tires rub the wheel well a little.
I hate owning a house. I would not have to worry about money for rotors, pads, calipers, and tires if I had not just bought this house.
Have to look at buying the rotors now. Stll not sure but leaning towards the R1 concepts still with hawk pads. Any ideas on calipers or any other inputs? Thanks everyone so far!

                    Re: rotors?

I bought the semi-loaded rebuilds from Napa (semi-loaded = everything but the pads). Cheap blank rotors that come with my carbotech pads in a package deal. No problems road racing and autocrossing.

                        aw, lol.

Well, heres whats up with all this as of now. My tires are in and have an appointment sunday morning at 10am to get them installed. I decided on the R1 concepts cross drilled and slotted with Hawk HPS plus pads. I then went started looking for calipers and thats when I hit a snag. I had no idea they were that expensive. I was finding whole kits for 1200-2000 bucks. Way past my budget. So I went to gmpartsdirect and they were 130 shipped for stock. So that puts me at $450 for pads, rotors, and calipers to be shipped. I searched this site last night and didnt really come up with alot on calipers. So on this finding of calipers being so expensive, should I just order these stockers with the above mentioned upgrades? Does anyone know of a front kit that includes calipers, pads, and rotors thats in the $500 market, give or take? Or how about an aftermarket caliper that is sold by itself for under 175 a piece?
I'm glad I researched all this before buying anything! To bad I'm not getting anywhere yet.

                          Re: rotors?

New stock calipers are good. They will easily haul down the Camaro from speed on a roadcourse and with proper pads (HP+ are great pads! HP+ pads front and HPS pads rear are the best combination) will flat out throw you out of your seat under maximum braking (with sticky compound tires of course). The braking system of a '98+ Camaro is one of its best traits... it's a really good system.

Unfortunately I dont have a 98+. I have a 96 bird with drums in the back. No Y87 here, sigh.

I have a new question after speaking with my dad last night. He said on his 77 vette when he put new calipers on it he had to buy the pistons seperate. Our calipers' are all just one piece, right? I dont have to get anything seperate do I?
