New Rotors and Brake Pads...$400?

  • New Rotors and Brake Pads...$400?

    Well I had problems with spark plug wires...burned out and messed up the coil pack too. So that costed me $280 to fix and then they noticed a pulsing when braking on my car. They think the rotor(s) might be warped...so I will probably need new rotors and brake pads.

    They quoted me a little over $400 for two new rotors and two ceramic brake pads (for the rear wheels). Is that a little too much? I'm also not sure if I even need the ceramic ones or not. What do you guys suggest? What kinds of rotors and brake pads should I get? I don't do a lot of driving, so I don't need the top of the line really.

        At jegs.com the left and right rear rotors will cost 147.76 plus shipping and that is rear cross-drilled and vented rotors by power stop and the break pads are 71.99 Hawk HPS Performance Brake Pads. This is a performance break system and only cost 219.75 + shipping. You can find some cheaper ones on the internet for less. The rear rotor and pads are not hard to replace.

          At Autozone they have rotors for 123.98 which are duralast rotors with a 2 year war, and the brake pads are DURALAST-GOLD Brake Pads they are ceramic pads they cost 38.99 and come with a limited life time war. If you don't do alot of driving or even if you do then this is not a bad buy. They are not performance but they will do the trick. And this cost 167.97

            Alright, thanks a lot for all the info. So I'm lookin at around $200 for the parts...then labor. So they wanted about $200 in labor...ridiculous. One of my friends can do brakes and said he could do mine for me. He has done his car and a couple others too. Would you guys let someone do brakes on your car like that? It's not too hard is it...I just don't want anything to get screwed up and I wouldn't have any kind of warranty...

              I have done the front brake rotors and pads and it is very easy takes me about an 1 1/2 hrs and that is a while to do brakes. Im guessing the back aren't to diffrent. If you know him well enough I would let him do it. The main things he could mess up is the threds on you lugs in my opinion anyways. Just if he is going to charge you don't let him screw you over like the dealership. $200 is insane. It should take only a couple hours tops. Also your back ones are rotors not drums right?

                Yes, all 98+ f-bods came with rear disk's.

                To change the rear brakes and rotors:
                -Lift rear of car, take wheels off, prop up car on jack stands...never trust a Hyraulic Jack alone!!
                -Remove the two bolts that hold the caliper on #1 pictured here
                -Remove the two bolts that hold the Caliper's Base on and remove, #4 in the picture
                -The rotor can now slide off, replace with new one
                -Reinstall the Caliper's Base with the two bolts
                -Now you're going to have to compress the caliper piston ~SLOWLY~ with a large C-Clamp until they are fully seated back in the caliper
                -After the piston is fully seated, install new brake pads
                -Reinstall the caliper and the two bolts
                -Start car and slowly pump brake pedal continuosly until the pedal is back to where it feels normal again *it may take about 5-10 full brake pumps before it starts to build up pressure again
                -Take out jackstands, let car down...enjoy!

                  i lurk ls1tech harder than i've ever lurked anything before.
                  over at ls1tech, everyone is raving about rotorworks cross drilled (and/or) slotted FRONT AND REAR (a package of 4!) rotors for $169.99 from ws6store.com. i guess they're machined oem blanks, so its not like they're made from cheap chinese chrome plated plastic or anything. no one appears to have had any problems that can be blamed on the rotors. they only have good things to say.

                  i ended up buying a set which came out to $205 or something with tax and shipping. you can argue that cross drilled rotors are prone to cracking and are not really as effective as good blanks, but at around $50 a rotor who cares? i'm paying $85 for ebc greenstuff front pads and then another $70~ for rear. so the whole brake cost is looking pretty miniscule considering the four wheel disc setup. i think goodyear wanted to charge me $250 to change my rear pads (after they compared the wear with a huge SUV brake pad to try and convince me i had no pads left - i should have strangled them on the spot).
