How hard is it to replace the rear wheel bearing on a 2000 v6 it is on the left side.

not that hard, you do need a slide hammer to get the old bearing out... probably an hour or so max.

      Re: Rear Wheel Bearing

The hardest part is taking everything apart to get to the bearings. The rear diff cover has to be removed and it drains the fluid. Then the center pin in the gears must be removed so the c-clips to the axle can fall off, then the axle slides out AFTER you remove all of the brake & caliper hardware.

For those who have done it before, it's really nothing hard at all. Just time consuming...as-is most automotive work.

I'm no expert on giving a price quote, but I'd guess between $100-$200.

well i found out it will be about 160 so i have decided to do it my self. What type of differential fluid will i need and how much. This is my first time doing work on a differential so If some one can give my a walk through of this process i would greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance.

                Re: Rear Wheel Bearing

                Step 1-
Remove the wheels, brake calipers and caliper mounts. Then take the rotors off and you should be left with the alxles only.

                Step 2-
Once you undo the 10 bolts holding the rear differential cover on, fluid will come pouring out real fast. A good tip is to loosen all of the bolts a bit and pry the diff cover open at the bottom so it slowly drains into a container.

                Step 3-
After it's drained, remove the rest of the bolts and the cover. Turn the rear wheel(s) slowly and you'll see a large round center pin with a bolt holding it in place. I think it's a 7/16" bolt, but I'm not totally sure. Remove the bolt and the large round pin "should" slide out.

                Step 4-
Once the large pin is out, (YOU'LL NEED HELP HERE!) have someone push one axle towards the center of the car as you're looking at the rear gears. There will be a small "C-Clip" on the end of the axle that will fall off, and you need to recover that!! Once the c-clip falls out, the axle can be removed.

                Step 5-
Locate the seal that needs replacing. I recommend that you do both seals since everything is already torn down. Use a slide hammer or seal puller to remove the old seal, and re-install the new one.

                Step 6-
Start putting things back together in reverse. The old gasket on the diff cover and rear housing must be cleaned off. You need a new gasket and some silicone.

                Step 7-
After everything is put back together, you need to refill the diff fluid. There is a 3/8" square hole on the right passenger side of the rearend housing, towards the front, next to the driveshaft. This is the Fill Plug. Figure out a way to get fluid into there with the car being as level as possible. Once fluid begins to trickle out, it's full and reinstall the 3/8" plug.

I used a pump that I bought at Autozone to pump the fluid into the rear housing from it's container. The pump was about $5-$10...I forget.

                Done!
