how accurate is the speed rating on tires? im getting my speed limiter off soon and want to know if i should get new tires...currents are bfgoodrich traction t/a t rated. of course im not going to be driving at 120+ but its nice to know i can ;)

    Re: speed rating?

For your own safety I would not exceed the speed rating on your tires. They probably wouldn't blow out if you exceed the rated speed for a few moments, but if you are going 130mph+ on tires rated for 118mph you are just asking for problems.

Just resist the temptation to exceed the rating until you replace the tires. I have my speed limiter removed but have yet to exceed 118, the rated speed for my stock Goodyear GA tires.

I have the traction t/a too, why would you wan't to get rid of them? or are you talkin about getting them, i thought those were tires most people WANT to keep? arn't they suposed to be some pretty good tires?

Unless your tires are really old you could get away with it once in a while. Like they've already said tho, i wouln't recomend it, and its certainly dangerous. That said, donuts are only rated to 55mph and people drive on those on the freeways all the time...

Another reason donut tires have a low speed rating is, if you drive at high speeds or long distances with two different sized tires on the drive wheels, it will destroy your differential. The donut is just meant to get you someplace to get your tire fixed.
