  • Snow tires on officially :)

Yeah, so with winter here and snow coming on and off in small amounts, I put the subs in teh trunk for weight and put on my 15x7s wrapped in Kelly Magna-grip 205/70R15 snow tires on the back and General all-season 205/70s up front and I have to say I'm pretty pleased with their performance so far. I had teh generals on the rims originally but the local Mavis only had 3 snows in stock so I picked two up. I drive around in two inches of snow with no problems accelerating (Of course I can't give it much throttle) but it is very controllable so far.

I'm just waiting for a nice snow, like 4 inches so i'll have a couple inches of packed snow on my road to really try 'em out. My BFGoodrich G-force sport 245/50R16 tires didn't let my car move 10 feet in the snow last year.

I love my snow tires. I purchased a set of Blizzaks with 9/32's of tread off of ebay for $160 shipped. They are the greatest puchase I ever made for my car. I have only driven in fresh snow with them twice, but many streets are still packed with snow. The car is extremely predictable now and it is hard to get a good fishtail going. I work at a Toyota dealership and my car does better in the snow now than most of the brand new fwd vehicles.

Just having them on the rear helps that significantly? I would think your better off with a full set...maybe I'm wrong.

I wish it snowed here :( On all my racing video's there is always a small section in there of people powersliding on icy roads/parking lots and doing donuts and it just looks so effortlessly to do so in the snow. Seems like a lot of fun when meaning to do it.

Sorry to hijack the thread with my little rant, I will get back on topic now.

You would think having regular tires up front would make the traction a little more squirrely so to say. It wouldn't get good traction and possibly pull the front end to either side when hitting a nice patch of snow on the road and then would set you into a nice sideways slide unless the rear tires were able to overcompensate and pull you back straight. Just be careful until you know exactly how it will do in more than 2 inches of snow.

The big problem is that tires only on the rear can make you go, but don't help much with turning or stopping.

exactly, my brother tryed that years ago with his 3rd gen camaro, the car wanted to go straight when braking around corner's. much better to have 4 snow tires than two.

yeah, definitely would be better but so far so good. the tires that push you dfnitely need the extra traction though, ive noticed on my 245s in the snow my steering wasnt so bad but the rear liked to slide out if i was even able to move more than 20 feet. alot of other cars around here are only on two snows in the rear and all-seasons up front.

we'll see how it does, worse comes to worse i put snows up front too

I really don't get the fun of snow, we get it here but I don't enjoy it one bit...even in an open parking lot.

I broke my neon in the snow. I was 16 at the time, pulling e-brake powerslides in an open parking lot and I overslid on a patch of ice and macked a curb, bending my rim pretty badly lol. I drove home on my spare that night needless to say.
