  • can't figure this out...which is why i need your help...rear LCA's maybe?

My car has been making a loud rattle in the back when i got over a bump, so i looked under my car and the bolts in my rear LCA's weren't tight!! so i tightened them best i could, but now if i go over a large bump, i hear this loud pop/clunk that sounds horrible. would you guys have any ideas if its the LCA or another component? could it be worn down bushings?

    thanks for the help

describe the loud pop/clunk a little better.
are your rear springs seated correctly?

well, ill try to explain it in more detail. i got my rear main seal and pinion seal replaced, and when i got it back from the shop, i had a loud rattle over my right side rear wheel so I took it back, and they said the right rear lca was bad (the bushing wasn't staying in the hole) so they put the bushing back in and told me to come back when i was ready to do the repair.

the rattle went away, until i took it to another shop for a warranty repair, which was replacing the fuel pump, and when i got it back from this shop, it started to make this same rattle on both sides!! so i check under my car, and the bolts on both rear lca's were not tight at all! so i tightened them best i could using a socket set. NOW if i go over a large bump, i hear a loud pop from the rear right side. it doesnt sound good and makes me not want to drive my car. i can tell that my bushings on the lca's are deteriating, but i dont think that would cause this loud pop. im sorry i cant describe it better, but its a loud pop/clank that comes from over the right rear wheel area.

        thanks for the help

sounds like something is catching, sticking, then popping free to go through its range of motion when there is enough tension.

if you jack up the back right side of the car, remove the lca (just 2 bolts really) and take a good look at it yourself. also, get the wheel off and check to make sure the spring is in the seat (and not off to the side catching on the bumpstop). you might get lucky and find a spot where metal is rubbing against metal for a dead giveaway.

if it is the LCA, i have 2 stock ones off my 99 SS - i can send you one of them for $10 + shipping.

ok, so i got a chance to look under my car, and i'm really not sure what to look for, but i thought this picture might help. can you tell if its the bushing or the lca?

                thanks for the help again

the part where the LCA mounts to the body looks really messed up.
                  what happened there?

here's my stock LCA to compare to yours. yours looks fine, but you can't see whats going on with the bushing without taking the LCA out. the sound could be the bushing moving against the LCA itself.

here you can see my LCA mount. the car is lowered, sitting on the ground and it is the left side with a BMR LCA, but you can see how the mount should look.

                  right side front mount

i'd say pull the LCA out and look at the bushings. you can also look to see where rubber could be hitting metal or where metal could be hitting metal. if its a muffled clank sound, that could be a hard rubber bushing hitting sheet metal.
