    Re: shocks

I think most people here would recommend Bilstein HDs or SLPs, or for some extra money, KYB adjustables.

      To mimic Jack Nicholson:

You don't want the best. You can't afford the best.

The best are Penskes. Their bottom of the line model is about $1600 for a set and they go higher.

          Re: shocks

Boy....I see both Monroes and Penskes mentioned in the same thread about shocks. Talk about a wide range of products.

The one key piece of information lacking is what's the purpose of the car? Normal street use. Agressive street driving? Autocross? Road racing? Drag racing?

Also, is cost not important, somewhat important or very important?

                Re: shocks

For typical daily driving I'd go with any "premium" replacement shock...Monroe, Delco...whatever. Just, when you shop, don't go for the cheapest Monroe or whatever, go for the high-priced unit.

If you want a performance shock, try either the Koni or the Bilstein but, when you talk to the Koni or Bilstein dealer, make sure they know this is for street use not racing. Even then, you'll find the ride with the Koni or the Bilstein a bit more firm than with premium replacement shock.

                  Re: shocks

I have Monroe's on my Firebird. Its ok for daily driving, it feels about the same as stock. BUT if I was to do it again, I would have spent the extra and bought the Bilstein's with the springs and done it at the same time. I just figured it wouldn't matter since it is a daily driver, but it matters more than I thought.

Now Koni's rock, I never tried them on a Firebird, but I do have them on my Ferrari and they are awesome.

:omg: If you have a Ferrari, why would you have a V6 F-body??

Its a long story, but basically I bought a 1978 308 GTS many years ago. Its an entry level Ferrari, but a Ferrari none the less. I had a hell of a time relocating it to the island I live on with import taxes and stuff.....which is an experience I dont want to go through again. Now, I had an engine compartment fire with the Ferrari and it was my daily driver. Since the insurance didn't cover FIRE, they didn't pay a dime, so the rebuild was killing my pocketbook and I needed a car quickly to get to and from work. Well, the coolest thing I could find for sell locally was a Firebird V-6. I fell in love with the car and always planned to upgrade to a Trans Am, but too lazy to import one and there is only one real trans am on island and one firehawk.

The moral of the story is Ferrari are cool, but if you break one....its easier to throw it in the trash and get another......with an F-Body, just a fun car that is semi cheap to tweak and fun to drive.
