Well spring has finally come around so I decided to switch to my Z06 rims. I have 275/40/17 the whole way around. The 2 front tires are from last year while the 2 in the rear are new. Now I had the tires all balanced, but for some reason when I get up around 45-50, the steering wheel shakes some. Last year the steering wheel never shook at any speed. Any reason this could be doing this? Occasionally the wheel will jerk to one side as well. If I let the steering wheel go I also either go to the left or to the right, not like real fast but a steady pace. I need some help.

Re: Car shaking at higher speeds
Man I am having the same damn problem. I had to get new tires cuz whatever this shaking is had caused my other tires to wear incorrectly. They used some fancy term I can't remember. I got the new tires on, balanced, aligned and it still shakes. I think I'm gonna take it to the dealership cuz these other well known shops don't have a clue.1999 Bright Red A4 3.8L V6 Camaro

Re: Car shaking at higher speeds
Ok I don't know if this is what caused mine yet, but I noticed I have a leak by the edge of the rim where the brand new tire meets it. I'm fed up with these shops.1999 Bright Red A4 3.8L V6 Camaro

Re: Car shaking at higher speeds
if your wheels arent balanced yet get them rebalanced, allignment if u havent done that(mabey 4 wheel) and check out your brakes. Brakes could have worn rotors or worn pads.
I just replaced mine on my 94 and now i dont get any freeway jiggle with my wheel. Also if u have newere tires in the back swap them for your fronts, always want better tred up front man.

This is by far THE WORST EFFING IDEA... New tread always goes in the rear.. its lighter, needs more stability...
If you listen to him, you will be going around a corner normally, an your rear will slip out, easy to control but a problem when your not trying to fishtail.
Also, while driving down the road. You hit a puddle doing 35+. Front tires stick. Rears hydroplane out spinning the vehicle... VERY hard to control.
I read this up in both Car and Driver and Motor Trend magazines.
An no i doesn't matter whether its FF, FR, or AWD.
New tread always in the rear!!

Re: Car shaking at higher speeds
well if front tires lose traction or blow out or something u have 0 control. Rear tires blow out will be harder to control but it will be like drifting or the e brake is sliding in the back and u will still have the front brakes to stop. Try putting the ebrake on once and see how little it takes to lock up the rears and feel how little stopping power they have verses the fronts.

I see what your saying though, with bald tires in the front. if you take a turn to fast, an your front tires let lose. Then you will just keep going straight. You naturally think more tread will hold the road, when more tread will actually break lose faster causing you to spin/go straight into gaurdrail. So, new tires in front. You take the turn to fast. You still won't have grip. Least you had a better chance with the bald tires. Think of it like this, brand new tires actually fold an bend more then used ones..(not talkbing about the side wall but the tread itself).. more tread left to move around.. Rubber is soft.. Even the hardest of rubber.
Or just put those new tires in the front, stick the bald ones in the rear... An have a field day putting yourself at risk. ;)Last edited by Finkledbody; 04-18-2007, 10:35 AM.
