  • Removing rear suspension

So last night I went out to swap rear ends out and started to remove rear suspension. My 14 y/o brother came out to help me. Went to take tires off and I broke my center cap. My wheels are discontinued and now I'm waiting for a store in California to open cause I think they have the centers in back collecting dust, no wheels or bolts for centers though, just caps. I need new bolts also, looks like I'm headed to lowes sometime. Anyways, we get the shocks and springs out super easy. We then go to take rear sway bar and not so easy. Never could get end links removed so we just removed the brackets the links go into on the car and I'm gonna sawzaw the endlinks off and buy new ones. They need replaced anyways. Went to remove the panhard bar and neither one of us could get our respective sides off. I went to his side (passenger side) and got the panhard bolt off that side but could not get the driver side off. I sprayed the hell out of it with WD-40 but as of last night it was still stuck. I didn't even mess with the LCA's as I'm sure there stuck also. I did just barely try to remove the driveshaft and it wasn't coming off either.

I guess what I'm trying to say is after bolts have been on a car for 11+ years they get stuck! Does anyone have any suggestion on removing this stuff. A guy at work told me to take a torch to the bolts. I'm gonna try that tonight if I have time to work on it, or else it will wait til Sunday.

    Re: Removing rear suspension

Guess what, Torch is empty. I ended up working on it another 2 hours tonight and got the LCA's off, the drive shaft and pulled the rearend out a little bit. I never did get the bolts off the PHB on driverside but it atatches to rear end and thats getting replaced so I dont care right now. The brake lines are still connected as I have not got new calipers yet and dont want brake fluid everywhere. Seems once I get new rearend in that putting the new suspension parts should be pretty simple. I wish I would have upgraded sooner.

Get PB-Blast to use for penetrating oil, it does a lot better than WD-40. Also get the proper wheel studs if that is what you are needing to replace and not just normal bolts. If you run into any other problems post up and I'll try to help you out. I've done this 3 times already so I've got a little experience with it :p

I replaced my rear wheel studs about 5 years ago. The bolt I was refering to is actually a screw to hold my center cap to the wheel. Sorry for wrong termanology

            Re: Removing rear suspension

yep any questions give me a heads up... I have done it a few times myself, actually going to be doing it again soon.

Unless your car is really insanely rusted...(and even if it is) Sounds like you need leverage.

Go buy a nice long handled breakerbar/wrench.

I have a 1.5 foot long 1/2 drive breaker bar, that pretty much takes out any bolt. And if it doesn;t work, I through the jack handle on it, giving me like 3.5 foot worth of leverage.

once you get it started it should help...

Right tools help the job. I have worked on old cars too, and got the stuff off.

I just registered for some tools for my wedding, I asked for a longer handle 3/8ths drive wrench, and a few more specialty wrenches.

I have a breaker bar but my jack handle won't slip over the end of it. I have a 4 way that I could slip over it but not at that paticular location. No room.

                      then "Its hammer time"

get creative, I think you can get to just about every bolt on the suspension with a big wrench or a hammer.

Then go buy a large pipe that will fit over it. The added leverage comes in handy all the time.
