  • Cross drilled/slotted rotors

I need to replace my stock rotors and brakes.

    I'm buying Hawk HPS pads.

I want to buy cross drilled and or slotted rotors.

I'm not in it for performance..just looks.

    I don't race or AutoX..just a daily driver and I don't drive over 75mph

I just want some cooler looking rotors. Will they warp/crack under normal driving?

Are the ones off ebay a ripoff/scam?

Is there a difference in the ones you can buy at ws6store.com for $170 different than the ones on ebay priced around that?

I don't have money to re replace these rotors if they really will poop out on me as many believe they will.

I have read many threads/articles/stickys about how they really arent for performance etc.

I just like the looks of them. Under my normal driving conditions, is it ok to go ahead and get them without having to worry about them crapping out?

I'm sorry for kicking a dead horse if thats what I'm doing..but I'm just trying to get some opinions.

I'm not going to be doing any 160mph hard stops or whatever I don't abuse my car.

    Thanks guys

      Re: Cross drilled/slotted rotors

I read a couple product reviews on ws6store.com just now.

They were for the 4 crossdrilled/slotted rotors for $170 package.

Out of 12 reviews 8 had great things to say. However 4 said after a few months that they noticed cracks near the holes.

I also noticed most of the bad reviews were from people who put them on V8 cars. Do you think maybe theirs cracked because they raced or whatnot?

I'm still a little scared to buy them after these reviews.

But I really like the looks of them and I really want them!! Lol i sound like a little indecisive girl lol sorry.

I'm just not sure which ones to buy. I don't really want slots even though they look cool too but they "scrape away a layer" of your brake pad or something...why would I want that?

true they do scrape away layers of brake pads, but they look awesome

Dads got them on the 02 ws6. daily driver.. no problems :P and his average speed is a good 75-80 lol

nah man. idk what brand they are.

uhh hes had them for.. at least the better part of a year.
no issues :P he thinks they brake better then regular when all the sites selling them say they dont make braking better.. theres a whole history behind them which i really really really dont feel like saying. lol
he just went to the local mechanic and was like yo i want slotted discs and the dudes like mk come back at 5 lol

              Re: Cross drilled/slotted rotors

i have seen a lot of drilled rotors that are cracked. especially the ebay ones.

the only drilled rotors that are worth a flip are baer rotors, just because they cast the rotors and forge the holes into the so that they reduce the risk of cracking.

drilled rotors dont stop better than your regular blanks and they cant be turned down when they start to wear out, so you have to throw them away.

if you want them just for show, as you said, id stick with a good set made by a respectable company, if you get knockoffs you run the risks of shatering one while you are driving, and that is a scary thing to happen.

                  I have drilled/slotted on my 94 TA

They were put on last spring and are still just fine.

Not sure what brand they are

just bought a set of 4 zinc coated D/S rotors and pads off ebay for $250 total, i dont think the price really matters, doesnt really seem to be any difference in what kind of rotors you can get so might as well go for the cheapest price. cant wait till i get them in!

I've had R1 concepts on my car for a little over a year and no problems. Search this section for post from me about R1 concepts. I like them.

i got the cheapest ones off of ebay. i haven't had one single problem with them. but i haven't put 1000 miles on them. they stop perfect for me doing 107 at the track.

                          Re: Cross drilled/slotted rotors

Slots are for scraping material off the pad, ensuring a fresh surface against the rotor at all times, holes are for outgassing, preventing pad float.

Slots won't really affect the strength of the rotor, holes will almost inevitably crack. If you can find slots w/o holes, you'll have the looks and performance without sacrificing longevity. (Look for Powerslot brand, or Brembo for quality. $$$, but quality).

                            Re: Cross drilled/slotted rotors

Uhhg. Cross drilled and slotted will both decrease stopping power. For one modern pads don't out gas. Also removing material from the face of the rotor does two things that are not good, first it removes frictional surface, and second it removes mass. The more friction and mass a rotor has the better it will help a car come to a stop. The whole "fresh surface" on the pad argument is debatable at best, besides it will only make you have to change pads more often. Also cross drilling will very likely develope into stress cracks. Lastly the more surface the better cooling there will be actually as backwards as that might sound to you. So instead of getting drilled or slotted rotors go get a nice thick heavy set of brembo blanks instead. All I have to say to you people who don't want to believe me is in the picture posted below, good day.

                              Re: Cross drilled/slotted rotors

All I can say is that my Slotted and Dimpled rotors from www.rotorpros.com stop my car considerably better than the stockers ever did, even when the stockers were still newish. That said, physics and thermodynamics definitely prove that what T-Punk said is true. More surface area makes for better cooling and more material volume is better for heat absorption.

Problem is that Brembo blanks, and stock replacements aren't cheap. Stock replacements from Advance Auto were going to run well over 200 bucks for all 4 corners, whereas I got my slotted/dimpled for 200 shipped (and still have no stress cracks around the dimples after over 15K miles).
