Keeping speed around a corner is the opposite of drifting. Drifting is automotive figure skating.

It is stunt driving, in a sense. you are handling the car in a way your average driver would consider out of control, but keeping control while doing so.

I didn't say it didn't take skill. I respect a lot of the professional drifters. There is no doubt they have a ton of car control and a great deal of skill. A lot of them actually do stunt driving along with other forms of racing. Look at Rhys Millen for example.

The fact is drift driving is just a way of showing off unless you are in a rally car. There isn't anything wrong with that, but I don't really care for all the bandwagon hoping that it has caused.

Car and Driver build a drift car out of a GTO and entered into a competition. I guess when they won, the crowd booed b/c it wasn't a Japanese car. :(

I don't recall if the event was in Japan or not.

Reminds me as a kid. There was this street stock (v8, auto, street tires) driver at the local asphalt track. He would drift like a dirt racer every lap. He would smoke everyone assuming his tires held up. As as kid, I loved watching him.

What the hell does it matter if its japanese or american built? Drifiting is rear wheel high powered driving/sliding! If anything... America has the advantage at that.

Its big in Japan. My old roommate was asian and was into it. He even watched this cartoon called Initail D about drifting. Its just now starting to catch on here in the past few years. I know there was a Viper and GTO in the professional circuit, not sure of any other American cars, coulda but I dunno of any.

Yeah, we have (or had) "Formula D" here in the states at some point. Dunno if it's still goin on or not, it's like they quit covering it all the sudden. Anyways, when the GTO was put on hold, they started racing a Solstice with some pretty nice specs. Can't remember much else about it. But the Viper and the GTO were pretty dominant.

drifting is the fastest way to clear a corner... it really takes a lot of concentration... our car has lots of understeer to it... its kinda hard... there are lots of American Sport Compact Cars out there competed in Formula D... people often ask me why i do it... its the ADRENALINE RUSH...

i know people have commented on this and i am sorry i dont meen to add more on this. however drifting is not for ricers. A ricer is a small 4 banger with some stupid exhaust system and and the guy thinks he can take on anyone. drift cars, are up there in the 400+ hp range and know how to use that power to the car's limits. Drifting is an art form and anyone that can do it i give them hardcore props. Byrd14 hey man i hope you get your car diled in and more power to you. hey when you get a chance get some vids up i would like to see that. good luck

Sounds like the fastest way to wrap the car around a tree too!

drifting is intentional oversteer with style and certain technique.

If you've ever been in a car that handles great then you'd know that drifiting isn't the fastest way around a corner
