    Re: Tire explosion at 85MPH

i was making a u turn on a 4 lane way blvd and with a 'fast" car doing the same thing on my butt, so i punched it and went drifting for a good lenght"city block" i just held it cause i knew if i would try to pull out too fast i would break something. i finally got straight, hit the nitrous and was gone, about a mile down the road i heard a weird noise, took the car right to my dads house. where i found that i loosen 18 or 20 lug nuts. kinda scary.

no more of that for me

reminds me of when i was driving my new 'maro home. i had made it about 225 miles and then my front right tire goes down. it went down slowly though so it was easy to control. but it still sucks.

That example doesn't apply to what happened to the OP, but you can't drive expecting a tire to blow out. Sure check your tires tread, make sure they are properly inflated, and get the correct speed rating, but if you drive in fear of that happening you might as well get a bike.
I don't drive in fear of that happening, I choose to slow down to reduce my chances of a bad outcome. Driving with the flow of traffic is one thing, but around here nobody cruises at 85 towards an offramp. Anyways... glad your okay man. It would be hilarious if the news had a camera at the off ramp and some guy on the news was talking about the traffic and you come drifting down the offramp

The tires are 245/50HR-16 KUMHOS. You are right, 85MPH is to fast for most and is breaking the law but I95 here in the Daytona area at 6:30 am is slow.
I have aired her out well over that when the mood and conditions where right.
The only way I maintained control was part knowlege and part luck and I know this and I'm ok with it.
If this slide was on one of the traffic cameras it probably looked really COOL or really STUPID. You be the judge.

            Re: Tire explosion at 85MPH

it all depends on the area you are in,driving conditions,if you can handle it and how tough speed enforcement in your area is...

personally if im on the expressway im going to be doing 75-80 in michigan(they wont bother u at 75 mph and u can slow down 5 mph if you are paying attention *speed limit is 70)..

but i know if i go down to ohio the traffic seems to avg arnd 65 with everyone staying around the speed limit (nazi cops).

dude. wow. blowouts are something i always fear. so what the heck happened really? did the tire pop? or blow to pieces? either way i guess is still bad, but thats f-ed up to get new tires and they just go boom on you. is the wheel alright? did you hit a pothole or something before the blow? like maybe you pinched the tire and wheel somehow? glad you are alright, damn that sucks

                Re: Tire explosion at 85MPH

The sidewall blew out. After removing the tire from the wheel. The manager from Discount tire and I agreed that the belt separated which caused the tire to tear itself apart. I did not buy them there. I bought them from The Tirerack.
I did buy the replacement from Discount tire they also sell them.
As for the wheel, it's OK!

how did that wheel survive sliding for obviously hundreds of feet with the tire nearly shredded off? That's some luck there.

                    Re: Tire explosion at 85MPH

The tire stayed on the wheel, I guess the tire remained between the wheel and the road. How I don't know. There was a little rash on the wheel but you can't really see it with it mounted. These tires have thick raised area that protrudes over the wheel lip, they call it a rim saver design

85 on I10 here is average. every morning on my way to work i do 100-115 on like a 5 mile part of I10 (assumeing weather conditions permit). i figure it keeps the enigne cleaned and running better to have that little 5 mins at 4k rpms.

to run at about 4k rpms for a good distance, all you have to do, assuming you have an a4, is shift into D not OD. and cruise at about 60-70 mph. make sure that you shift into that before you get up to speed... i forgot once. and it felt like i ran over a speedbump on the highway. it sucked.
