Chrome rim gone bad

I went to discount tire yesterday to have them look at my drivers side rear tire, it is a GM Chrome SS rim 17X9 with BFG's 275/40/17. It would start to lose PSI after about 2-3 days it would go from 35 to 25 PSI. After a week it would go down to 15 PSI. They came back after looking at it and said their was no leaks it the tire itself. But the chrome around the tire was corroded. Causing it to leak, they said they put some type of sealant around the area. But didn't say if it would hold and work for a long time. Has anyone ever heard of rims doing this? What are my options if the seal doesn't work? A new rim, or having it chromed again. I was thinking of using so of that fix a flat tire spray if it doesn't work. What do you think? Thanks Steve

the fix a flat is just horrible, you could try taking the tire off, and sanding the corrosion down a bit, it may help the bead seal better.

but i really know nothing about tires, so dont quote me on this

one of my rims did that. we used a black tire seal sealer on it. its like a very sticky black goo. comes in a metal can wiht a brush on the lid. worked fine

one of my rims did that. we used a black tire seal sealer on it. its like a very sticky black goo. comes in a metal can wiht a brush on the lid. worked fine

I read up on that stuff, I need to let the air out of the tire first before I use the tire sealer on it, right?

My dad's old Mark VIII had that problem on both rear wheels. Quick effective fix, he put tubes in the back tires.

If you read..."Do not use on Z rated or high performance tires".

Do it right...or you could be replacing more than a rim, but your car.

I learned my lesson the hardway about that fix a flat crap. Doesn't work and totally unbalances your tires till you get to a decent speed. I had corrosion around my valve stem so I kept bringing it back in and getting it fixed for free till they really fixed it. At tireman or belle tire. They should take a grinder or softpad to the wheel before they remount and seal the tire anyways. Sounds kinda like that crappy paint shop over here where you have to tape up your windows yourself or else they'll just spray em too.

I picked up some bead sealer yesterday at napa, but so far the tire is holding its pressure from when discount put their sealer on it. I hope it stays sealed. I'm checking it every couple of days now. But I did learn the back side of the tire is where the tire seals onto the rim. I did not no that, I thought both sides of the rim sealed onto the tire. The guy at napa was explaining it to me. I was worried about using the bead sealer on the front of the rim because it would look horrible with black goop around the chrome and tire. Learned something new.
