  • Break Upgraded needed

Ok so I was following my friends earlier today. One has a twin turbo 350Z and the other one has a turbocharged Civic. We were driving through the mountians and I could definitley out run the civic in the turns but on the straight aways they would take over. My brakes got really hot and at one point I could barely even stop. What can I do as far as upgrades go? I know I can buy a rear brake swap from drums to disk I could also buy the C5 conversion but that is really expensive. Does the Z28 have a lot larger rotors or what? How much does the rear brake swap help. What have others done to help their brakeing? I have done some searching and I just wanted to know what yall thought. Thanks.

    brake*

and you could just swap out to a disc rear, probably less work then switching to disks. better pads, some pads are designed to increase stopping power the warmer they get.

try drilled rotors on the front with performance pads & replace and adjust your rear shoes.

Unless he goes high quality with the drilled rotors, (which I believe wont be needed) he will end up cracking them under the heat he is talking about.

Slotted rotors are to wear the pad down faster, to help with braking. You will go through pads faster, but it will keep the pad clean.

But yes, look at a few different pads. See whats best.

Hawk pads and powerslot rotors, dot4 fluid, win.

if your talkin about straight up racing i'd do the slotted rotors but knowing you i'd just do the rear disc swap or whatever. it's not like your going to be doing mountain driving everyday.

I would'nt be so sure about that Trey. If I get accepted up here I will be going to this place a lot it was a lot of fun. I dont think it had a whloe lot to do with the fact that it was the mountians, there were not any major inclines or declines. There was this one straight away where I got going pretty fast and then I had to slow down a lot to make the sharp turn then there was a short straight away and When I hit the brakes again I just didnt want to stop.

What is the difference in size between the 94Z28 and the 94 V6 front rotors. I did some research and couldnt find the answer. I checked out lmperformance.com, Advance Auto Parts and SummitRacing. All I found was that one of the rotors was 10.9in. I think that was on the V6 but not sure.

Upgrade your front brakes to the 12" 98 and up units.

Thats what I was thinking about doing. What all do I need for that? Rotors, Calipers. Do I need a new master cylinder what else? The 98 and up V6 has the same brakes as the Z28 right?

                        None.

ALL 93-97 fronts have 10.9" rotors & single-piston calipers. V8's had 11.4" rear discs, V6's had drums - unless it was a Y87, then it also had the 11.4" rear discs.

Spindles & calipers. Then any rotor/pad you want.

No, not a good idea as the car will now be biased to the front. The bigger bore 98+ master will just make it worse.

ALL 98-02 have the same brakes front and rear. V8 or V6 doesn't matter.

I'm thinking that the rear swap, by itself, won't help much performance wise Although it looks alot better. The front brakes are >80% of your stopping force. If you can't do the swap to 98-02 discs, at least look into some High Quality pads that will still work at the high temps you are going to have.

FirebirdGT, I take that to mean that the front and rear pads are identical on 98-02?
