  • Possible brake problem???

When I start my car for the first drive of the day I have an unusual problem. When I step on the brake pedal, the brake light in the dash cluster flickers. The brake pedal feels fine, the fluid is full, and there are no leaks. Also, all of the brake light bulbs are working fine, as well as the hand brake light switch. It will continue to do this for about 5 minutes of driving and then it will go away until the next day.

Any ideas? Could it be low vacuum to the booster since the car was sitting all night long? Bad Master Cylinder? Bad Booster?

After 5 minutes the light no longer flickers and the brakes are fine all day long.

    Thanks...

The "brake" light corresponds to the e-brake. Sounds like there is a loose connection somewhere on that switch or in the wiring.

TheGr8Schlotzky - thanks for the reply.

Not entirely true. When your master cylinder fails the brake light will illuminate telling you that there is a problem. However, that normally is followed by a brake pedal that falls to the floor which mine is not doing.

I will have to watch it very carefully.

      Thanks for your help.

I just replaced my master cylinder that was in terrible shape, leaking tons of fluid into the booster and ruining it in turn as well. I had no lights, just a crappy brake system.

        What year is your car?

It is a 1993. Every GM car I have ever owned has had the brake light illuminate when there is a brake pressure issue.

I am not 100% sure on the Firebird, so I will just watch it closely. So far, no leaks and good brake pressure.
