haveing wider tires lose mpg?

well on a full take i can get 300 to 310 miles before fill up on my stock tires 235/55/16 now that i changed my tires 245/50/16 in the front and 255/50/16 in the rear on an full take i get now 270 to 280 so what gives? thanks guys

Wider tires = more friction
More friction = less mpg

Also possible they're under inflated, which means more friction, which means more work to move the car, which means more gas used, which means worst mileage :P. Check the pressure.

the tire pressure is fine i always check it :) so should i go back to my stock tire width? i was think of 235/50/16 in the front and 245/50/16 in the rear will this help or just 235/50/16 all round thanks again guys

i got good handling i got a stut tower a 35mm sway bar and im try to get a 19mm i also got Eibach lowering springs that i be putting on soon so handling looks good :) for looks i think they will be looking more at my cme then how wide my tires are lol gas is not cheap

you should be getting about 375-400 miles to tank

275-40-17 on Speedlines and I can easily do 375-400 to a tank with 3.73s in an auto. I've gotten 421 miles once...but 99+ cars have a 16.5 gallon tank. Other factors come to play when you are considering MPG. Like condition of componets, drving habits...

i rember when i use to get 375-400 to the tank back in the days lol when my car was stock now the max i get is 320 on a full tank and stock tires. my mods are whisper lid, k&n filter ,pos 3.73 ,aulminum driveshaft, catco high flow cat, magnaflow 2.5 cat back, 1.9 rockers with ls6 spring and ls1 retainers, hpp3, hypertec 160 t-stat, msd coil pack with msd wires

i have 275's all around, and i didnt notice a significant loss of mpg from stock (245)

its just weird that im losing mpg then i guess ill play around with my tires and see what happen i would no why im loseing mpg

I dont understand if wider tires = more friction and more friction = worse mpg the friction is causing the engine to work harder which is why there is a loss in mpgs. right? with the engine working harder it would seem to me like it would take more power.
