  • Core charge?

Since I'm redoing my brakes, I called my uncle in FL about getting new calipers and he said something about a $23 core charge. He told me that I would probably be better off buying them locally. (w/o the core charge the calipers cost $8.31 a peice)

So I called advanced auto this afternoon and asked them about getting some new calipers for the car since i'm redoing everything that has to do with the brakes. The lady told me the cost of the brakes plus a $25 core charge. Then she proceeded to explain to me that I had to bring my old ones in for it not to cost me the 25 extra.

What I understand the core charge to be is a caliper trade. Anyone understand why??

So I was like 25, there has to be somewhere cheaper. I randomly called Don Bulluck Chevrolet and Cadillac (local chevy dealer) and they want $220.21 for one.

    Re: Core charge?

If you just buy a caliper, it is X amount of dollars. If you do the core exchange, it's X-25 dollars. Your caliper is 25 dollars credit toward your purchase basically. The calipers you buy are rebuilt calipers, so you letting them have your old caliper allows them to rebuild yours and sell it to the new guy, so they give you credit for it.

      Re: Core charge?

in some situations like if you are buying something legitimately new they impose a core charge just so there are no remanufactures and if some one decides to reman the product then in cost them x amount more because they would have to buy the core which would make the the new product stay competitive in the market.

GM just started imposing cores on aluminum wheels for something similar, and if you buy one of there new engines there is a core so they can send it to acdelco and offer a reman engine competitively.
