  • Question to those of your who have replaced your front shocks..

I got the passenger side out and went at the top shock bolt. It was rusted to hell so i ended up grinding it out. I got the smaller piece out of the upper shock mount, but the larger piece with the studs on it is not budging. The bolt is gone and the stud is hardly there, so what is holding it on? I've beat on it and jumped on it and nothing is giving.

Mine were rusted also and the I had to cut my nuts off in order to get the strut plates off. Nothing should be holding them on after uve took the nut off and did what u did to it. Maybe its just stuck somehow.

I had the same problem when I did this a couple years ago. I had to replace both shock mounts and the inserts.

Well I beat on it with a hammer, I put it in a vise and beat on it some more. I grinded it flush, and beat on it with a punch and hammer, and nothing budged. I then drilled out the stud with a small bit and moved my way up to a bit that was nearly the diameter of the stud and nothing happened. Eventually, after getting a bigger bit yet, I drilled extra deep and the metal sleeve insert in the shock mount broke off the mount and there were two pieces...of course the metal insert was still stuck on the shock. So I wedged a huge screw driver in with a hammer and eventually got that off. I'm going to silicon the two pieces back together and use it as there really was no damage done, just that the two came apart.

Wish me luck for the drivers side....

LOL, yea, its a pain in the a**... I also ended having to get new shock mounts...

Also, make sure you pack the tops of those shock mounts where the bolt is with some sort of grease to keep those bolts from rusting like that again.

Magically, somehow, water gets into those mounts and has no where to go but sit there and rust the bolt :P

Re: Question to those of your who have replaced your front shocks..

I covered them in bearing grease so they wouldn't rust again like that.

The driver side was just as bad, I had to drill it out entirely as well. But it's finally together. I'll put the wheels on tomorrow and take it off the stands and take it for a nice drive.

Re: Question to those of your who have replaced your front shocks..

I swapped them out for a set of KYB AGXs.

I didn't mention, I took some air tools to the top shock bolt for the driver side. I was using an impact wrench, and it didn't budge until I hit well over 100psi.. and even 150psi wouldn't get the bolt off so I ended up cutting it off and drilling it like the other side.
