so my rear shocks are leaking some oil and i think its time to replace. the fronts seem fine though, plus i dont feel like dealing with the front shocks since they seem like theyd be the same as replacing struts and struts are annoying. (i dont have a spring compressor at home)
anyways. ive heard that you should replace all 4 together and ive heard it doesnt matter if you do 2. so is it fine to just do the rears if the fronts seem fine? will it still help handeling alot?
I don't see a problem with replacing just the rear shocks. It should help out your ultimate launch traction and could change the feel of the rear of the car depending on the stiffness of the new shocks, but I wouldn't think it would affect handling much for the better.

alright thats cool thanks. it wouldnt make it handle worse in any way, right?
In short, I'd say yes, it will handle "worse." Because of the inconsistencies of rebound and dampening, the rear won't be matched to the front and the car will handle differently. It may act like there is too much or too little rear bar depending on what shocks you go with.
ugh thats lame. i dont feel like going out and looking at them, but the fronts are similar to struts, right? like youd replace them the same way as you would struts, right?
Yeah, they are basically struts, but technically shocks. I won't lie, it's a pain to do the front. But autozone rents spring compressors for a $30 deposit. Ends up free so it's no big deal.
dont forget that there is a strong possibilty that when you go to remove the upper bolt on front shock that its going to be rusted on there like thats its job.

great. do they usually break or can you get them off without breaking, its just reallly difficult?
i doubt you'll break it. I wish mine broke. Although even if they did break, it was welded to the upper shock mount with rust and time. You may end up drilling the entire stud like I did.
I actually just picked up a couple used ones from someone parting there car out. I didn't want to tear it up by torching or air chissel but I saw them on horsepower TV use an air chissel on a camaro and it seemed to work ok for them. :cool:
