  • Huge brake problem.

My brakes have been warped for a while now and just when I get a good amount of money to fix them this happens...

I was driving home and next thing I know it sounds like my exhaust is dragging on the ground. I hear it, feel it, everything. I go out and I can't see anything. To make a long story short, I started rolling with my door open and I heard it coming from my drivers side rear wheel. Theres a piece of metal or something broken inside the drum brake, or something, I have no idea, and its grinding around. If I go around 30ish it stops because it probably just spins around with the wheel. I'm obviously not driving it but do you think it would be safe to drive it to an auto shop? Also, any ideas what it is and how much it would cost if anything got damaged?

    Thanks.

I have no idea on cost.

Personnally I would probably drive it to shop to get it fixed cause fronts do most of the braking.

However the logical side of my brain says to have it towed.

There are a bunch of little widgets inside a drum brake (which makes them a pain to do). My guess is that some spring or widget came loose, or perhaps the pad wore through was scraping the drum. My guess is that you'll need new drums, but maybe the shop can just turn them. 35-60 bucks for a drum at a parts store (depending on quality) shop probably charge 50-100% more than that for the part, *shouldn't* cost any more shop time... but without popping off the wheel there's no way to know what's going on.

sounds to me like the spring holding one of the shoes in place snapped

i wouldnt be afraid to say those drums have never been changed, or only changed once in your cars lifetime

Why not just take the wheel off and take the drum off?

Do you not have access to a jack and jack stands?

Ouch! Thats got to suck man. I just replaced my whole brake setup with after market parts and I spent about $180 but that was everything from rotors to shoes

Im not in a position to do it myself right now and im just going to have a shop that we rely on do it for me. This car isnt worth upgrading so im going to wait for a new car to start doing big projects.
