  • dry-rotted foam between body and rear suspension

The other day I suffered a blowout while on my way to a wedding. I wound up going to a goodyear to get my rear tires replaced before continuing on down to the wedding (another 60 miles away). While it was on the lift I noticed the driver side had this hard foam padding in the shape of a triangle attached to the body just in front of the rear shock and coil springs. It had two screws holding it in from the top and it looked like it would rest on the axle when the car was lowered to the ground. I then took a look at the right side (which always bottomed out), and there was nothing there except flakes of a dry-rotted piece foam and screws holding the remains of what might have been the same upside-down triangle. I then went back over to the left side and poked the foam and it fell off. It was totally dry-rotted. Now, I bottom out on the left side just as bad as I do on the right whenever I hit the slightest bump. I'm just wondering if anyone knows where I can get this foam padding.

The piece of foam is in my car, and I'll take pictures of it later if it will help.

I've looked at gmpartsdirects diagrams, and this image closely resembles what I'm talking about:

It looks to be item #7 in the picture, with caption:

They are called bump stops. Check the parts counter at your local dealership or try GMPartsdirect.com.

Just get an aftermarket polyurethane, will last a life time.

Wouldnt that almost be as hard as hitting the axle?? Would not a stock rubber piece work better for that application?

Could be guess it depends on your driving. If someone is driving so hard or on a road to get their axle to hit that much well they probably will have more to worry about.

I don't drive hard. It's just ever since I bought the car it's literally sat 3 inches off the ground. From the wheel weld you can see maybe an inch gap. Just enough to slide my hand between the tire. Parking next to a regular firebird yesterday you see like 2-3 inches between the tire and wheel weld.

Here is a picture from back in November:

118k. Stock, yes. I just had it in when I did all 4 tires, still says the shocks and springs are good. Though I did change the rear springs to help higher the car. Still same height.

i used the energy suspension bump stops and they are a LOT better than OEM.

I'll keep that in mind for later. I installed the gm bump stops and now I can go over a bump without hitting the ground. It hits something, but at least it's not the road. It feels like a much better ride now that the car is sitting an inch higher.
