    vehicle weight (lb) / tire pressure (lb/in2) = some area (in2)

    just because you get an area doing that calculation, doesnt mean it is accurate.

    thats just an ideal/theoretical calculation.

    if you were to go outside and measure your contact patch directly, youd find that its actually larger.

    if your tire is inflated properly, youll have a square contact patch that you can measure easily. stick a piece of paper on either side of the tire as far in as it can go. measure the distance between em. multiply that by the width of the tire. thats your actual contact patch.

    the pressure isnt distributed evenly across the whole thing, which is why it doesnt match up with the theoretical calculation of weight/pressure.

    youll notice that halving your pressure doesnt double your contact patch, or in other words, actual contact patch is not 1:1 proportional with tire pressure.
