With the same diameter tire, same load, and same pressure, a wider tire will have a wider contact patch. However the overall contact area will not change by a significant amount. Anyone who doesn't believe this is a fool.
The reason a wider tire will give more cornering grip is because lateral grip is based on tread stiffness, width of contact patch, and length of contact patch. With wider size tires, the sidewall height is usually reduced, thus making the tire stiffer.
