what all is required besides the adapter plate to convert to the C5 front brakes. ive seen the adapter on ebay, and was wondering what all i would have to have to do it right. my 96 brakes suck ace!!!:( anyway... any help would be great from anyone who has done it. would you recomend it or should i just up to the 98+ ls1 brakes? thanks

    Re: corvette brakes

it will be alot easier and cheaper for you to convert to 98+ brakes in general, they dont have to be LS1, all were the larger, two-piston style.

For C5 Brakes you need the adapter plate, obviously the C5 style brake and rotor, c5 lines, and IIRC you need to make som adjustment to the master cylinder for proper pressure.

what would be more cost effective and which would get the best performance. i am building the car for corners. nothing to serious, i have a drag car and a bike and was wanting something for the curvy roads around my area that i dont have to lean for.

iirc = if i recall correctly

the most cost effective is getting 98-02 front brakes.

the best performance is obviously the c5 brake package

            Re: corvette brakes

would i be able to fit them in my stock wheel? i have the older trans am 16" ones. if i whave to get 17"'s i will probly go with the 98 to 02 ones. to bad i am probly selling my 98 parts car, they would be FREE!!! however if i could get some late model TA wheels or ZR1s i would definitly go with the vette brakes. iv'e also heard of people doing the C5 Z06 brakes is that different from the reg. C5?

i believe c5 Z06 brakes were Four Piston calipers?

and yeah, you'll need to switch to 17's for proper clearance...

                  Re: corvette brakes

used 98+ brakes just go pull the whole steering knuckles off one at a junkyard.

and you wont find 17" rims for cheap anywhere...lol

                    Re: corvette brakes

good point about the wheels. the thing is the only yards around here only have 97 and older stuff. are the LT1 brakes any better than the V6 ones? if so i could do that pretty cheap.

                      Re: corvette brakes

LT1 brakes and Y87 brakes are pretty much the same.

do you have rear discs? that'd be a good place to start.

                        Re: corvette brakes

OK, time to fix the BAD info! :spank:

ALL 93-97 V6 and V8 have the SAME front brakes - single piston.

ONLY the V8 and Y87 V6 have rear discs.

ALL 98-02 V8 and V6 have the same front and rear brakes - front 2-piston, rear single piston.

                        Read the Tech Database!

I have installed the 93-97 rear discs (replaced drums) and the 98+ front brakes on my Bird.

The C5 calipers are 2-piston. ONLY the color is different - stock gray, Z06 red. The C6 has 4-piston.

                        .

ok rob, now please point out to me which of my info was bad?

Lt1's and y87's DO have the exact same brake setups

The 98+ front brakes ARE two piston just like I said...

and I just confirmed, C5 Z06 front brakes WERE two piston designs, not the four pistons as I thought. Four piston calipers were an aftermarket upgrade.

and actually, the C6 Z06 are not four piston, they are six piston.

And I also have done the 98+ front brake conversion.

so please, before you tell me i'm wrong, point out WHERE I'm wrong.

"LT1 brakes and Y87 brakes are pretty much the same." This implies some sort of difference.

And, brakes need to be referred by year NOT engine.

Right, I admitted the difference in c5 brakes,

but again...the c6 Z06 brakes are SIX PISTON.

and as for referring to them by year not engine...the v8 engines directly correlate to the change in years as far as mild redesigns go.....so why does it make a difference as long as it gets the point across?

btw. i love the wheels on your car. I just happened to look at your sig while typing this. lol
