I have a 97 Firebird that bottoms out in the REAR with one 200lb passenger in the back when I hit a bump. What should I replace? Will just replacing the shocks solve this or is it necessary to replace the coil springs too? Thanks.

Re: Rearend Bottoming Out
Even before you buy new spings and shocks CHECK YOUR BUMP STOPS! sorry for the yellin, but i bent an axle shaft becuase mine were simply gone. Got new ones from rockauto.com, expensive but cheaper and easier then finding a new or used 28spline axle shaft.
After that yea go for the shocks, I like my KYB AGX's1994 3.4L DSG Camaro

Re: Rearend Bottoming Out
I see guys saying check and change bump stops but the bump stops only get damage when the shock along with the spring no longer supports the vehicle when going over bumps and the travelling suspension tries to become in contact with the body/chassis causing contact to the bump stops but continuous contact will break them.

Re: Rearend Bottoming Out
I believe they are saying check the bump stops because technically bottoming out is the wheel smashing the fenders...the problem is most likely the spring and the shocks. Shocks controls the dampening...springs should control the travel. Like I said if you search, I just corrected this problem by installing new rear springs from moog....I had my shocks done about 3 months ago.

Re: Rearend Bottoming Out
Im saying do the bump stops because if the cheapest easiest way to protect yourself from really doing damage to your ride. When the car really "bottoms out" its not the wheel hitting the fenders that im worried about it the actual rear end hitting the frame of the car. Easy way to bend a shaft. Do the shocks though, so easy to do on the rear of an fbody its not even funny. just do it
KYB's are the most cost efficient shock upgrade from stock with nice adjustability without paying a ton for konis or blistiensLast edited by usp55; 08-27-2008, 10:49 PM.1994 3.4L DSG Camaro

gmpartsdirect.com
click the "cataloge" Tab at the top
type in year, make, model
choose rear suspension
click "suspension componets" subcatagory in middle of page
then click "bumper"
it will come up as "bumper black" for 19.71 each
click view illustration and u will see its #7 the bump stop
pain in the *** to find and expensive for what it is but worth every penny. HTH1994 3.4L DSG Camaro
