Brake Noise

Board Members,

My rear driver-side break has recently decided to make a noise which disappears when I am applying the break. It sounds to me like a very gentle rubbing/scraping of the rotor by the pad. The car drives just the same as always, yet there has been a decrease in the gas mileage. Should I just replace the pads and rotors and hope it goes away, or is there some type of alignment issue I need to work on? Any thoughts?

Have you checked out the pads and rotor on the driver side, or are you just taking a shot in the dark?

Check your pads an rotors first. If theyre ok, then time to start looking at other things. I really dont see that alignment would be an issue with with it.

Your pads are probably just worn down to the "squeeker tab" They're made to create noise that you'll notice to let you know that you need to change your pads. I've been down to my squeeker tabs too and yeah, it goes away when you apply the brake.

is it s constant noise, or one that happens with every rotation of the tire?

pull your back brakes, inspect them, and use a hammer and file to get the rust off of the rotor, then put them back on if everything looks good

The pads and rotors are pretty old, so I think that I will just look to replace those first. Thanks for the input, and I will let you all know how it goes.

BTW, you may not need to replace the rotors. I don't know how much wear they're suppose to endure before you replace them but it should be common sense if you look at them.. or if your steering wheel shakes when you brake. Other than that, unless you don't mind you shouldn't have to replace the rotors with the pads.

I replaced my rear brakes and rotors about 2 months ago. They are still squealing like crazy. So be prepared for that XD
