  • Bad Caliper Mount ?

I was trying to put new rotors and pads on the front today and I ran into a problem that will be better explained with pictures when I get around to posting them. But... I get the new rotor on and then compress fully both pistons and then I slide the caliper back on to the mount. When I put the new pads on the caliper won't completely shut. To check if the pistons were the culprit, I left that pad off and just put the one closer to the outside of the car on and it still would not shut. The top of the caliper mount has this weird looking bolt hole that sticks out further than the bottom one and it looks like it may have been "pulled out" of its hole; this hole is supposed to line up with teh caliper hole and you put the bolt through both holes. The one on the caliper won't go in towards the car far enough without unreasonable force. If you do force it, the rotor wont turn because the pad on the outside is in there too tight.

So- I tried slamming the caliper mount screw hole that sticks out far back in with a hammer and that didnt work; neither did putting the mount in a vice and trying to screw it in. I am just really confused here. Has anyone else had this issue when trying to install new pads? I can't be the only one.

I will post pics once they get sent to me. I would really appreciate any input you all have.

    Thanks!

See... if I force it closed (which is near impossible) it sandwiches the outer pad so much that the rotor wont turn. Do Caliper mounts go bad or break?

are you sure you pushed the piston all of the way back in?

Yea. The pistons are not the issue here; i left the piston side pad off and just put in the other one in and it would not close.

that pin that is out to far is supposed to slide in and out freely. it is called a "slide pin". what happens is they rust together and wont move any more. i had the same problem last month. if you can get the pin out they can be replaced for about $10. otherwise you have two choices, buy the bracket for $100 each (rip-off) from the dealer or a brand new caliper and bracket from NAPA for around $60. i went with the second choice.
