  • Got my 01 SS steering column finally

Finally got it looks great , came with one ing. key and BCM and passenger key(don't know why, I guess they just strip them). It has a rado controls which I don't need but it looks great. I'm going to go ahead and replace the IGN. sensor since I bought a new one already. Looks like a pretty easy install I hope,LOL Damm thing has been sitting for almost 3 weeks coming up. I'll post how it goes.

I got the column out yesterday and will start to install the new one on Tues. hopefully, I think it will be alot easier to install it since I know where eveything is. The 01' SS column is same as the 96 manual column except for the steering controls which I won't need or use. I replaced the ING. switch since it was out. I also need to look at the BCM to put the one that came with the column in. So will be pulling the glove box. I think about 3 days should be finished I hope, and rolling again, been about a month now Damm.

Got thr BCM in in about 15 mins. ,so far the easiest.

Re: Got my 01 SS steering column finally

I got the 01' BCM in and the steering column in , and it fired right up no lights or codes. Everything mounted just like the 96'column, they had to send me the cover for where the turn signal is but other than that great price for a column ,BCM and keys from ebay, Clevland auto parts, sent the cover for turn signal in 2 days after I told them it was missing and mine wouldn't fit, so thats a great CO. to do buisness with in my book. I just have to wire up some stuff and put the air bag on and the horn plastic thing and plastic covers and I'm done. So for those who have manual cars, all the manual coulmns are the same as in wiring them up but the turn signal cover off my V6 was too small for the SS column with radio controls, I think it was the radio controls that made the difference(don't know for sure could be because it is a SS don't know) Just info for those who swap theres, autos their is a difference so you would have to check it out(thats what the GM parts guy said anyways so it might not be correct). 96-02 BCM's are the same. And I didn't need to do a Vats relink since I used the BCM that came with the column. Thanks again for the guys that gave me info.

Re: Got my 01 SS steering column finally

Got everything together and running moved the column about a 1/2" forward so I have alittle more room. Found a 01' steeering coupler and a V8 01' rack & pinion FE2 with 40,000 miles on it for $100, so I will be upgrading to the 14.4 steering ratio instead of my 16.9 stock 96' one with 170,000 miles on it(surpised it has lasted so long ) and have a coupler instead of the rag joint which is suppose to be alot better, less slop in the steering. Will post once I get it in and feel the difference of the 2 racks. I also saw the that new Camaros only have a 15.4 steering ratio on the SS models. Found that interesting. Unless I misread the specs.

Re: Got my 01 SS steering column finally

My IGN. locked up where you put the key in I had to use vise grips to get the key out. Also Vats in the column was messed up. Couldn't start it or drive it. So I found a 01 SS steering rack that came with the BCM and Key for $85 shipped. And when my dad was helping me he said why don't we update the the rag joint to a coupler and get a used rack & pinion with less miles since you have so many miles on this one, plus have quicker steering and better coupler for $100.
