  • Random Question

So i've been looking at a lot of old cars on the internet, and i notice that their odometers never seem to go above 99,999.9 miles. Was that because the manufactures didn't think the car would last past that? Or was it because they were too lazy to install a 7th digit?

hmm,..never noticed that. Prolly a combination i would say. Manufacturers might not have thought that many miles would never have been achieved back in those days. Thats my guess.

      Re: Random Question

mostly, cars werent designed, or expected even, to make it much past 100k miles... if a car rolled over the odometer, it was usually pretty aperent if a car had 112k miles or 12k miles... 212k was almost always out of the question.. however, with advances in technology, as well as much better quality controls in place, cars are now expected to last well over 100k miles. hence the need for the extra digit... hell, to blow out some of their old inventory, a local hyundai is offering a 200k, 20 yr warrenty on their cars.. that woulda been completely unimaginable 20 yrs ago...

            Re: Random Question

They are giving a 20 year warranty? Isn't it usually 100k or 5 year warranty whatever comes first?

That's a hell of a warranty, you should go to the dealership and find out what exactly that warranty covers? I love the loopholes in those warranty contracts that pretty much make it slim and none what IS covered, but from the look of it, it would make someone believe that it is a lot that is covered.
