  • 1st grade grammar

Not to be an ***, but I figure that I would try to get some basic stuff out here. I am NOT an english major, but I like to think that I know the basics. I have noticed significant misuses of these words, so if you don't think you understand this stuff, take a glance! I am making these explanations simple, contrary to many grammar books.

Your- Indicates something that belongs to you. eg. Your car is ugly.
You're- Indicates that you are something. The apostrophe takes the place of the "a". eg. You're fat.

Their- Indicates a possession belonging to someone else, or a group of people. eg. Their cars are ugly.
They're- Indicates the state of being of someone else. eg. They're a bunch of ricers.
There- Indicates a location. eg. McDonalds is over there, fatty.

To- Indicates direction. eg. I am going to McDonalds, because I am fat.
Two- Is a number. eg. I have two cars.
Too- Functions in the same manner of "as well". eg. He is going to McDonalds, because he is fat too.

Won- A possible outcome of any form of competition. eg. I won the burger eating contest.
One- A number. aka "1". eg. Your mother has one leg.

Whose- Indicates the possession of an unknown subject. eg. Whose car is that?
Who's- Indicates the state of being of an unspecified subject. The apostrophe takes the place of the "i" in "who is..." eg. Who's going to McDonalds?

"should of." that is completely incorrect. It is a contraction of "should have", ie should've.
This is the same situation ascould've, would've, etc.
    (C/O notsonic)

"To be" is a wonderful verb. It can be very useful. Unfortunately, many people say "the car needs painted."
HOW DO YOU **** THAT UP?
The car needs TO BE painted.
    (C/O notsonic)

Than - To indicate the second member or the member taken as the point of departure in a comparison expressive of inequality.
    Then - At that time

Thats my entry for tonight. If you feel like you have some more good explanations, feel free to add them!

Here is one that bugs me a lot...

Sale- A noun. The physical transfer of something for compensation. eg. FOR SALE.
Sell- A verb. The action of transferring something for compensation. eg. I am selling.

Don't forget "set" and "sit". Or "lie", "lay", and "laid". Also, "who's" and "whose".

                Just to name a few.

Its not that difficult. Grammar was actually my best subject through out all my school years. :)

that stuff, while annoying, never really bothers me.

there are two things that do though.

"should of." that is completely incorrect.

its a contraction of should have, ie should've.

same goes for could've, would've, etc.

the second, and most mind boggling is when "to be" is left out.

                      the car needs painted.

HOW DO YOU **** THAT UP?

the car needs TO BE painted.

Yea but in all seriousness I'm not writing a paper for comp class. It's the internet if you get the point across then who cares. If can't understand what someone is trying to say because they used the wrong (there, their, or they're) then I don't know what to say about that.

I am completely against that. It creates a bad habit of misspelling and when you go to type a formal letter or report, you'll notice that you're constantly making mistake. I blame AOL intant message too somewhat. When I was young, I used to chat a lot on the AIM. But when I realized those slangs are taking over my vocabulary bank, I stopped using "aim language." I try to type with full sentences with proper punctuation. I always double space after period, single after comma etc.

And on a online forum, since people really don't know each other, they only way I will picture you is the way you type. If a see a paragraph filled with errors, bad punctuations, and run on sentences, i'll picture you as a 16 year old kid. I think it's a bad habit to use those slang languages.
