For anyone that is in or went to college, did any of you join a fraternity/sorority? I just transferred to a 4 year school and I am thinking of joining a fraternity. A very close friend of mine is already in the fraternity and has told me it really does pay off and makes the college experience a whole lot better. I have been going to the rush events each night this week, and it seems to me they are a very serious and structured organization, it's not all about parties and being a "frat boy".

Just wondering if anyone is in or is an alumni and what their experiences are like?

I am not in one but my friends that are seem to be cool with it. No major complaints at least.

I had a good time back in the day - - Made friends with a bunch of diverse guys I otherwise wouldn't.

8 years after we're still getting together to party - Something my independent buddies really miss out on.

from someone who is a junior in college....has pleadged and dropped a frat and lost 3 friends to frats.... DONT DO IT

it consumes all aspects of your life even when you arent at school. they determine when u have fun and when you dont. pledging is a BlTCH too. trust me...if u want to be an individual at college, make your own friends(not pay for them) and chase girls on your own. for the love of GOD dont do ittttttttttttttttttt

I think frats are ghey. I looked into a few when I was a freshman and they just seemed like a huge waste of time and money.

I absolutely loved college life and am sooooo glad I never joined.

Hmm well that seems to be the general consensus, some people think they suck, some people think they are good. I have friends that are already in though, so I think it would be worthwhile. At least I can say I was involved in some kind of extracurricular activity when I graduate.

              Re: Greek Life

It is impossible to generalize, trust me.

If you are thinking about it just because you like the structure of the organization, or you want to party.... Do it. Pretty lame though.

Do it if you want to have an inextricable bond with the guys. What I can recommend is that you rush, hang out with the guys, and see whats up.

I am in a LOCAL fraternity. My school banned national fraternities more than a hundred years ago, so "we" went around that rule and made some local groups. That just means that we don't have to answer to anyone other than ourselves. My frat was formed in 1913, so its not like it is a temporary thing. I came into school not wanting to pledge anything. Then I met my current frat brothers and didn't think twice. No regrets.

Niko, sounds like you joined a pretty gay frat. A bunch of tools flaunting their letters. My freshman year roommate rushed a frat like that. He was a ****ing loser.

I didn't say I was joining for the parties or because of the structure, but I'd rather join a frat with somewhat of a good reputation. The guys that I know and have met so far are real cool. I've been chilling with these guys for months so its not like I'm walking in meeting all these guys for the first time.

Yea Niko, I suspect the frat you went to join were a bunch of tools.

A close-minded opinion from a GDI, or personal experience? :poke:

Honestly, I enjoyed my experience in Greek Life. It was something different and I was proud to be a part of it. I learned a lot of valuable lessons and made connections that will go beyond just the college career. I have friends that are involved in sorority/fraternity groups and those that aren't. Those that knew me when I first joined respected my choices and stuck with me. Those that were already involved respected my wishes when I later decided that I needed to focus more on my life outside of the sorority and supported me when I became inactive. It's an experience that'll teach you a lot and will give back to you later on.

But seriously, give it a try. If it doesn't work out, worst you can do is drop it. If it does work out, then it's an investment that'll be worth it.

And yes, interestingly enough, I did meet one other girl in the sorority that had an avid interest in cars.

Not saying that it's a bad thing, but many of my friends who were in the frat had picked up some bad habits: Drunk drivering, drugs, and too much partying. They were outstanding in HS, but flunkies in colleges. That's why I never bothered.

My sister is another good example. She comes home from college and we caught her smoking weed. She confessed to my parents that she got it from her frat.
