  • Anyone get migraines?

I don't get them too often, but I had one yesterday... and its not totally uncommon for me to have them but I dont want to sound like a baby, compared to people that have to deal with them daily. I'd say I get them about once, or twice a month.

All I can say, is if you don't get them.. consider yourself blessed.

I can NOT function when I have a migraine, they are unbearable. Yesterday I had to leave work, because the slightest thing like the phone ringing, or computer beeping, or the time clock ticking every sixty seconds drives me insane.

The slightest light amplifies it, the sound of peoples voices, is just the Vice in which your head is in, getting tighter, and WORST of all ( in my case ) I am very sensitive to smell... and this old dumb fat hooker in the office, feels its neccesary to wear a bottle of the worst smelling perfume ive ever smelt in my entire life, daily. She wears so much, we can't figure it out, I dont know if she has terrible body odor, or a rotton vagina that shes trying to cover up, but it makes me so nauseated when shes within 50 ft of me.

Even after not eating, and I was very hungry, I went to get some food with a friend after I left work sick.. I ordered the food, and when we sat down to eat, the smell of the food turned me away, and I couldnt even eat a single bite.

If I had to deal with that type of misery on a daily basis I would definatley kill myself.

So after a long shower, a cat-nap, and probably close to O/D on medicine, it went away, and was demoted to a normal headache.

It ruined my day, and I was EXHAUSTED all night until I went to bed, and today I feel much better but I feel tired still.

Anyone else have horror stories about their headaches / migraines?

Any tips on how to help them go away?.
    *Matt

that sounds exactly like me ... except i usually get them anywhere from 4 to 8 times a month ... usually i'll know a few hours before it starts that it is going to happen ... i also i have slightly distorted vision at times during the migraine ... most of the time they last for the day but i have had them last 2 or 3 days ... generally the day it is gone i feel exhausted ... it kind of like a hangover feeling ... over the counter drugs do not help me at all ... i was prescribed some stuff for it a long time ago but i dont take it for certain reasons ... the best thing i've found that helps me, and it only works about 50% of the time, is physical activity ... if i force myself to go for about a 20 minute run ... then come home and lay one the floor with my eyes closed ... sometimes after the torture of doing it, my pain goes away ... sometime it just makes me puke ... lol

I'm an avid Steelers fan and NEVER miss a game, but I missed a few when I was 20-21 bc of migraines... I ended up spending most of the game with my head buried in a pillow in my bed praying for death...

                        Re: Anyone get migraines?

I've been having migraines since my first concussion playing football 15 years ago...I've had 4 or 5 concussions since and after 6 years since the last one, I still feel the effects. I've been able to significantly reduce the severity and frequency of the migraines by doing a few things tho.

I've read that a migraine is basically your brain's coping mechanism to have you avoid something it does not like. In your case, it might be the perfume. Basically, your brain just has enough of whatever it is that is bothering it and it decides it's going to force you to get away from it by making you extremely sensitive to light and sound...in other words, it wants you to lock yourself in a room where it will not be bothered anymore.

The first thing you can do is determine what brings on your migraines...every time you get one just write down what you ate, what you've smelled, how much sleep you got, what environment you're in, etc. If there's something common to each time you get one you may have a better understanding of what is causing them...then eliminate whatever it is. If it's the smell, keep in mind that a lot of offices have scent awareness policies...you should speak to the HR department who can speak with the perfume lady about laying off.

A couple of things that help me are a mixture of acetaminophen and caffeine...in other words I take two extra strength tylenol with a can of coke. Also diet seems to be a big factor for me, so I try to stay hydrated and nourished each day to avoid them.

oh and there's a couple of new studies out that are saying blue food coloring has been shown to be effective in reducing migraine symptoms. I don't know if it's all blue food coloring...maybe it's only a specific kind, but I think it's one of the most common types used.

I keep a stack of blue freezies in my freezer and I'm waiting for the next migraine to see if it actually works.

                            Re: Anyone get migraines?

I had mine from age of 7 and finally had a stroke at 32 , they were caused from a birth defect in my heart (PFO) hole inbetween the left & right side of the heart which would let clots go to the brain causing my migraines. Never found it since the Drs. would do MRI's and Cat scans of the head and never the heart since they never related the PFO of the heart to the brain until 2002. So since taking blood thinners I really haven't had a bad migraine since my stroke, so those people with miraines start taking asprin once a day or drink a beer or 2 to thin your blood and it should help prevent your blood vesils contstricting in your head and causing a migraine or if they are very frequent have your heart checked before you wake up with a stroke like I did.
