  • 3.1L swap to 3.4L or 3.8L

How tough would it be to switch from a 3.1L to a 3.4L or even a 3.8L? Would I have to switch out the gears and stuff? Tranny? Any help would be appreciated.

It would be really easy to swap a 3.4 in there. I am thinking of doing that in the future. You would be able to keep your transmission, computer, etc, so pretty much everything you have, you could use for the 3.4.

The 3.8 would be a different story though, you'd have to get new everything because it is a completely different engine. The 3.4 is in the same family of engines as the 3.1. They are both 60° engines while the 3.8 is a 90° engine. So if you are looking for more power, or just wanting a fresh new engine, then I'd recommend going with the 3.4.

Thanks. Yeah, my engine's got 158K on it, and i'd really like to keep it around for my kids, so i'd probably hafta' get a new engine eventually, so i figure i'll go for more power.

yep I looked into this swap for my 85 Camaro, basically everything carries over. When you get down to the motor everything looks the same, the intake manifold, water pump. This is probable by far the easiest swap. I think GM sells a new motor for loike $1500, I found some places that would sell used 3.4L on line. I think www.tacreationsusa.com sold reliable 3.4Ls for like $350.
