I replaced the shifter handle last fall on my 1991 Firebird, this has the black button molded on its left side and it solved the problem I had when I couldnt find 1st gear. Anyways, last night I noticed that when you throw it in PARK while the button was engaged and then release the handle assembly like normal, the vehicle jumps into REVERSE. At that point I have to throw it in NEUTRAL & apply the E-brake and shut it off and then throw it back to PARK. When I turn it on, it seems the torque converter is ready to stall in 0.5 seconds and it wants to lurch in reverse. I also found that my car does not have a Neutral start either, weird. So the question is do I have a faulty or misadjusted linkage under the car or is it that 4 inch white actuator plastic rod that slides into the shifter tube assembly that could be the simple problem? I have never seen this kind of behavior before. Any help or suggestions would be helpful. ( Btw, thanks to 3.4 for answering my previous problems, I know... the car is getting older with new & little problems arising lol )

That is a linkage adjustment issue. The plastic rod inside of the shifter has nothing to do with the gears, it just locks out the shifter movement. The adjust of the trans linkage will solve all of your problems. I have seen in some cases were the linkages become so worn that they stretch. If that happens, I new linkage is necessary.

Thanks Jerriko, I had a feeling that could be the culprit. I suppose you have any linkages available for my 3.1 just in case? What other necessary information is needed? If i need a new linkage assembly, I may have to go to dealer if used parts dont cut it but I'd like the best route since I do plan on keeping the car for sure. I'll definitely go to my trusty transmission shop to have it checked out but in the meantime I'll keep this forum posted on my findings very soon. UPDATE : I received a friendly call from my local transmission shop and they were happy to say it wasn't as bad as I thought. They described that the linkages were merely falling apart and they buttoned it back up. The shifter is nice and tight now like new.
