Those things fade away quite quickly. The only ones that really have them visable anymore mostly use decals. You can get them from the website below, along with pretty much every other decal you could ever want.
I was thinking about replacing mine also. I looked at ebay but decided to wait till I'm not so tight on money. The link posted has better prices than ebay, something that doesn't happen very often.
Has anybody ordered from the link? Just wondering because i've never heard of them before and was curious of there reputation.
i think i have my old center piece laying around somewhere when i replaced mine. it still in good shape and has the bird and says firebird in red. when i go home in a couple days i'll look for it.

For the record, that link I posted is the absolute best place to get your decals. I got my stripes from them, and because they didn't have the color in stock that I requested and shipped it a few days late, the guy sent me like 5 extra decals, including the back panel filler with the bird and "Firebird" lettering, as well as the "Pontiac" lettering for the back, and also a filler for the little bird on the nose of the car. All in all, he sent me like $50 in extras, completely free. Trust me, the site is no joke, I'm a satisfied customer.

For wetsanding, just buy a 2000 grit sandpaper, then fill a bucket up with water. Wet down the panel. Then, take the sandpaper, dip it in the bucket, and sand the bird and the whole panel down. This requires a lot of elbow grease. Remember to keep the panel and sandpaper wet.
Once you are done sanding the panel down, and the bird is gone, dry it off, and look at how SCRATCHED up it will be. Don't worry! This is why rubbing compound was invented Just rub the compound in the panel, wait for it to haze a bit, wipe off....and your panel will be nice and smooth (smoother than factory, IMO). You may have to rubbing compound it a few more times, but not that many.
Then, apply the decals you bought from the above website.
