  • where to mount HID ballasts?

Just got my HID conversion kit in today.

Got 9006 and 880 bulbs at 8000k 35W. I just want to see where some of you mounted your ballast boxes.

The instructions say to keep them out of the way of engine heat and the elements. I haven't looked under the hood yet, gonna try to get em on tomorrow, so figured I'd ask first.

    Thanks

mine came with metal brackets which hold the ballasts and bolt on wherever you like, made things pretty simple. im reformatting my main computer, but when i'm finished i'll get you some pics up.

mine are right next to the headlight brackets IIRC. i'll try and get my pc straight.

stupid work laptop blocks my photobucket for some reason haha.

haha sounds like a plan bro.

i installed kits on both my gf's explorer and my jeep without even really mounting the ballasts --- i just found places in the bay where they fit snug between things near the light assemblies and they have yet to give me any trouble or budge an inch. check for places like that too and i'll get you pics asap.

My fogs when I had them, mounted them under the radiator support, and then the head lights I put the ballast tucked behind the headlights or by the hood adjusters by the fuse panel on DR. side and by the Batt. on the Pass. side mines a 96' though so it would be different for the newer front end. Just thought I would throw out some ideas.

I had the bumper off as you can see, but it's accessible from underneath. Works great for me, they don't get wet because it's protected by the hood. Most are water resistant though anyway.

Do the ballast get really hot after normal use?

I have these plastic containers that fits on top of the ballast but it would fit snug so I don't know if its a good idea.

Re: where to mount HID ballasts?

Good question.. I've never touched it after use. They don't seem to say you need to mount them in ventilated areas though, so I would assume not.

Re: where to mount HID ballasts?

your ballasts should barely warm up to the touch ---- definitely not get hot.

i could drive all day with my lights on and should be able to hold any of the ballasts comfortably in my hand. if it starts getting hot or smokes, unplug it and investigate.

Re: where to mount HID ballasts?

I mounted mine right under the headlight with 3m tape, been there for 5-6 months.

Re: where to mount HID ballasts?

Well I got them hooked up today, flip the lights on and they look like crap. Its around noon here but the HIDs look like regular bulbs. The HIDS are 8000ks.

My car has a history of electrical issues so thats what I'm guessing, I cleaned the grounds in the engine bay but they look the same.

I'm gonna wait till night time to see how much they light up. But I've seen some trucks running around with HIDS on during the day and they are BRIGHT.

I'll get a picture up soon.

You don't have yellowed head light housings from the sun do you? I know my 6000K's I can see in the day because they have a bluish tint to them, they are the best at night though so I would wait until night time.

Well they are less than a year old, there halo housings, and I can see the blueish tint but its not up to HID standards I suppose.

So yeah I'ma wait till night time and see what happens.
