  • Steering wheel radio controls sometimes failing

I have a 1994 Firebird. When I play the Radio, all the steering wheel controls seem to work properly. But when I play a CD, some of the controls do not work, like the down volume and skip to previous track. Do you think this is a problem with the steering wheel buttons, or something screwed up with the radio itself? The cd/radio is the one with the EQ, and it it kind of flakey. CDs skip all the time when going over the smallest bump, and I can hardly catch any radio staitons.

Because of this problem, I was considering replacing my steering wheel with one from a 1995 Trans Am - which includes the radio controls and built in air bag (I can get it for under $100).

Will a steering wheel replacement be a straightforward job for a GM mechanic, or will it create more problems like needing to have a radio from a 1995+ in order to work with the radio controls of a 1995+ steering wheel? (the 94 steering wheel and radio controls look different, its not the same style steering wheel)

What is the best approach I should take -- do I change the steering wheel, or start with replacing my existing cd/radio instead?
