Alright, well I was hoping to get an in-dash LCD, everything was goign fine, I was going to get the Kenwood KVT-911, with navigation to go later, but then the guy was like "wait, you have a 2002 firebird, with monsoon?" I said yes, and then he told him how monsoon systems are a 2 ohm system and I needed a 4 ohm or something. Now I don't know what to do, but is this right? is monsoon a 4 ohm or 2 ohm system?

The Monsoon ssail subs are 2Ohm, the front door speakers are 4Ohm, and the rear deck speakers are 4Ohm. Whether or not some of these are in series or parallel I don't know (didn't bother to check), but I just sold mine.
I completely tore all the Monsoon-ness out of my Camaro about a month ago and installed my stereo. If you want to keep the speakers but replace the headunit you can just fine with an adaptor. Do a search on this forum and the archive for more info about the adaptor.2002 5-spd NBM Camaro

Dominic are sure that isn't reversed? I am looking the fronts that I took out of my 97 Bird and they are 2 ohm and I could swear the rear seat mid subs were 4 ohm when I looked at them last.
Skapimp...
At any rate, the adapter is the way to go, if your stereo shop doesn't know that...find another shop. Yes the Monsoon is a different breed but the amp works on speaker level inputs and isn't too picky about the ohms. I may be wrong on this, someone please correct me if I am, but I believe it is the rear channel wires that power up the monsoon, at least it was on mine. The fronts alone did not power up the amp but when the rear channel was connected and the power to the system turned on, the amp fired right up.97 Silver Bird
3.8 M5 Bone Stock Engine
15.528 @ 88.96 bone stock
www.fbodyenhancements.com/

Well, they said there was an adapter, but I'd lose sound quality, also they said the adapter would be hella' expensive or something. They are a good shop, they told me all this info, they also said they couldn't help me since this site online was better priced than they were... honest people... I'll give 'em that. Any more info would help, so far just speculation.2002 Silver Metallic A4 Firebird - All Options

you don't need an adapter (other than a standard GM wiring harness and an antenna adapter). You can just plug all the wires from your new deck in to the stock wires using the normal wiring harness. This is not a difficult thing. You can use the Monsoon amp. It feeds off of a high output signal from the original monsoon deck. You don't even need to use a remote turn on for the Monsoon. The sound may not be much of an improvement, but it will at the very least be just as good as it is currently. They might be a good shop, but shops like that where their people confidently say they know everything when they do not are the main reason that I'd prefer to dig around in my own car at my own risk than to put it in someone else's hand and ripped off or have them screw it up.
You can check out the FAQs at the very top of the electronics board over at LS1.com and you can verify my information and get part numbers for the metra kit and harness that you'll need.

I pulled my monsoon deck out and saw where the GM harness plugs in, but there's another small set of wires that plug in on the other side of the deck. They look like they may be for the amp...
Do you know what they are and what needs to be done with them?

jmeccia just unplug them, I heard that they are for steering wheel controls, not sure about that, but they are not for the amp. Mine had the extra set of wires too. Unplug them and forget they ever existed.97 Silver Bird
3.8 M5 Bone Stock Engine
15.528 @ 88.96 bone stock
www.fbodyenhancements.com/

since this got ttt'd anyway... those wires are for the speed sensitive volume control (the SVC knob on your radio) and also as the other post mentioned for steering wheel controls.Mike
\'99 Z28 LS1 (383 in the works) M6
stereo pics Almost sold, the amps are still for sale - make an offer.
Help Mike pay for his engine. oops, I think you're right on that one... either way, just disregard that whole little pigtail of wires, you don't need it and can't really use it.Mike
\'99 Z28 LS1 (383 in the works) M6
stereo pics Almost sold, the amps are still for sale - make an offer.
Help Mike pay for his engine. I agree, and I have been told several things it controls. At any rate it isn't used, unplug it and forget it.
