• Monsoon Problems

I'm really starting to get upset.

After a phone call and a visit to Best Buy last Saturday and picking out my head unit, they checked the car out and they said they could install it Sunday. They gave me prices and everything. I told them Sunday was no good because I was leaving for vacation that day. On my way home I stopped at the Specialists, which is a local place with several locations, and they have a good rep. I talk to a guy there and he gives me their price. Best Buy ended up cheaper because they do free install if you buy the HU from them. So vacation comes and goes, lastnight I call Best Buy up and make an appointment for today at 11:30 and they give me prices again. I show up at 11:30 and the guy looks at my car again and says they can't do it. Why is it that no one caught this until I'm ready to do the install? Now the stereo I was shooting to be installed today so it would be ready to go out to the car club tonight is "impossible" to install without changing out the whole Monsoon system. I ran over to Specialists again on my way home and they said the same thing and that no one makes an adaptor to install an aftermarket HU on a Monsoon system.

This can't be right. Almost all of us have aftermarket head units and everything, right? And I can't be the only one on the board with a Monsoon system. I checked the mods section and it says a simple install. Anyone have a link to someone that makes the wiring harness/adaptor?

EDIT: So I google monsoon and come up with additional info saying all the speakers are 4 ohm. Quoting the Best Buy guy showing me this adaptor: This plugs into all of the bose systems to adjust the aftermarket headunit signal to 1ohm because most factory systems only use 1ohm systems. Aftermarket is all 4ohm.

So this means I don't need any equipment at all other than the wiring harness, antenna adaptor, and the 1din headunit install piece?

Yep. Just like the FAQ section says. You can buy all this stuff at Best Buy, CC, or any other place that installs. Should be like $25-$30 for everything. The lack of knowledge by some installers kills me. It's VERY easy. You can do it yourself during a commercial break of the Simpsons.

I would do it myself but my dad feels strongly about professional installers and warranties. Yes, the same installers that say I need extra crap to do it. So I get the wiring harness and antenna adapter and it plugs right into what is hooked up to the stock HU now? My dad tries to make this stuff sound SO hard some times.

Yep pretty much. Antenna adapter plugs right in. Takes 10 seconds. Wiring harness plugs into the stock harness. Then you'll need to just match up the wires color to color with the headunit. Crimp red to red. Yellow to yellow. That type of thing. 15 minutes. Then just figure out the dash kit. Each one is a little different but it's pretty straight forward and obvious.

So you'll need those three things, wire strippers/crimps and a hand full of red or blue butt connectors. Pull off dash trim around headunit/AC controls with your hand. It's a little tough, but it just snaps in/out of place. Unscrew the bolts holding in the headunit. Slide it out and disconnect the wiring. Antenna plug will probably be tough to pull, but just give it a good yank straight out. Might have to reach around from under the glove box if your arm will not fit up front. For someone who knows nothing it shouldn't take longer then 30 minutes beginning to end.

Oh and your stock CD changer will not work with an aftermarket headunit. Just in case you have one....

Thanks! Will see if he will let me do it on my own. If not then I won't get it done for tonight. He's sure that I'm going to break something though

lol Grab the crimper, butt connectors, small socket set and do it in the parking lot at Best Buy. :D Then tell him you just made Best Buy install it anyway... and it works! You won't break anything. The only thing you apply pressure to is the dash trim piece around the headunit. But that how it comes on/off. Just apply even pressure across it. You know, don't just tug as hard as you can on one corner the whole time. Once the first fastener releases it's easy as pie. The rest pop right out. You'll see. You'll be pissed you even stressed about it.

Oh, disconnect the battery before you start any work. We don't need any more sparks then usual.

I don't get why Best Buy wouldn't do it. I install stereos there and I've seen a few camaros and firebirds get the monsoon unit swapped out in 15 minutes. The only problem I ever saw was that the amp had to come out but we never even had to replace the speakers or anything.

I bought the install Kit from Walmart, for like 10 bucks, and a wiring kit for like another 7 which included the Antenna adapter. It was so simple to install. It took less then 30 minutes all together. Worked fine with my stock monsoon equipment. Which the front speakers were replaced a few days later for Infinity's and A 12 sub and amp were installed. Camaro's are perfect for stereo's since you can't really fit anything in the rear anyways. ;)

Wow, someone bumped it. Anyways, the bad news is the parents wouldn't let me do it, then the next weekend I got my second ticket screwing around on a mountain. So the bird's going to sit for a few months while my parents make me drive my mom's Taurus
