  • Burning and losing oil !!

For the past few weeks I have noticed the smell of burning oil filter strongly through the vents in my car. The smell is stronger when sitting in a drive-thru or getting out of the car once it is parked.

This afternoon I had a chance to get underneath the car and change the oil. There is oil coming from the front of the block and the rear of the block. It is a very small amount and appears to fly back, hit the exhaust pipe and burn off. My guess is that the burning oil smell filters up between the engine and the firewall and enters through the vents. I was approximately 1qt low. I know it is a 4.5qt. system but I usually buy the 5qt. and put all of it in.

Any ideas exactly where the oil could be leaking from?

check your oil pan. I have to change mine out because it's so badly rusting. That may be where it's coming from

Possibly the front seal on the timing cover.

my guess is the oil pan gasket, it is pretty common for them to leak like yours is.

and next time, dont put 5 quarts in the engine, it is A LOT better to be a bit low than to be full.. especially by 1/2 quart...

Could be rear main seal and you smell buring oil cause its getting on your Y pipe.

No oil leak is easy to fix. Wipe everything down to make sure u know where it's coming from u don't have to do it again

Already done, I just need to get back under the car and find out where it is leaking. The oil pan appears to be rust free.

I still can't see what it is coming from, and the smell is getting worse. The oil looks okay and there doesn't appear to be anymore oil leaking since the last wipe down.

keep an eye on your oil levels. an oil leak isn't just going to fix it's self. and oil on your pipes will stink for a while
