With all this talk about how little rwhp our 3.4 put out, it makes me not want to mod it anymore because it just seems worthless.

DYNO---3.4L with Hypertech, before and after

its the auto.
auto 3.4s dyno around 120 rwhp or so. the manual makes a HUUUGE difference apparently.
my 1994 3.4L with a misfire (crank walk) and 89k miles on it with everything stock except for a K&N FIPK and 3" catback exhaust (flowmaster) - no cutout at the time - dyno'd at 142 rwhp / 186 rwtq.
as for mods, its all about what you do. my personal suggestion is to get rid of the crappy heads/intake system (**word of caution, replacing the crappy heads/intake system requires different pistons**) - because just by doing that i went from 142/186 - 166/203 (with the cutout closed, wanted to be an even measurement).
thats a gain of 24 rwhp / 17 rwtq. thats not too shabby (puts the car at 195hp/238tq).
so dont knock it just cause the auto loses a lot. a torque converter would help A LOT - as would a corvette servo and maybe a one piece aluminum driveshaft. would help eliminate those losses you are getting.
anyway. hope that helps some.

Crap and I only put down 329 with a lid and cutout. I should do some more mods. But seriously I never knew that a Hypertech was worth that much hp. Nice.

I thought about all that drivetrain loss I'm racking up. I think either my gears or U-joints are getting a bit loose. I'd be certain that having my tranny rebuilt would help alot. I've seen some T-5 trannies on ebay that look pretty tempting. I'd rather have a manual but the auto was all I could find when I bought mine.
But, doesn't the aluminum driveshaft help with acceleration? The same power is still at the motor, but it can get the wheels spinning a little quicker.
Nonetheless, I'd rather save the time, effort, and money for a V8. Don't get me wrong, I'm just like the rest of you guys. I love my car and I would bolt on, weld on, port and polish, everything I could if money weren't a problem. I'm just trying to look a bit further down the road. After seeing that 2002 Z28 put down some crazy numbers, it helped me put things in perspective. There is NO substitute for the V8 rumble. NONE! damn, I didn't know that 3.4's were that bad, I assumed they would put out at least 125rwHP or something like that, from what I read some of you guys are putting out 115. I drove a 3.4 5 speed before, it didn't feel that slow to me, definately felt like it had like 130 or so, not as fast as 3.8 but definately not as slow as a civic.
I am wondering now, what are 3.8's putting out stock. I've read somewhere that we had between 165-170rwhp, I hope it's not lower than that.
Good job with your car Russell, its impressive to see that your HP gains are that high and you might even hit 200 soon with some more mods.2005 Chevrolet Corvette C6
M6, Magnaflow\'s 14336
C6 Pics

Old car:
1996 Firebird A4
SLP Cold Air Intake
Magnaflow Catback Exhaust
Magnaflow Catalytic Converter

George Mason University
CEIE Major
Pi Kappa Alpha

Firebird Pics

Since my car has such high mileage, I would assume a lower mileage car (70K or so) would show better gains. Or, 3.4's that have just been rebuilt might show even more. My car is nearing retirement age so it probably didn't do the Hypertech justice.
Still, 6-7 hp from a plug in and go mod ain't too shabby. <pardon my hick talk>95 Camaro 3.4L A4
Bosch plugs/MSD wires, K&N FIPK , Magnaflow catback, hi-flo cat, B&M Shift+, Dee\'s spacer
Kenwood KDX-859, eXcelon Amps, Infinity Kappa 3-way doors and Perfect10 sub
Behold, the raw fury that is known as the 3.4!!!

hehe.. i already hit 200 ;)
cutout open: 170 @ 4833 rpm / 207 tq @ 3259 rpm
(translates to 200hp/244tq) -- same day same dyno. just wanted to see what a capped system would do :D heheh.
anyway. theres ya go. and high miles dont necessarily do anything bad, its all in how the motor is (seals and stuff)

I don't know where you got those H.P numbers. My 3.4L at the rear wheels is an average of 165. I had it tested 4 times with different combinations and the lowest H.P. number was 160 at the wheels. The torque on mine was around 230. With the stock water pump bypassed and an electric water pump those numbers raised by at least 15-35 depending on temp and other conditions. Even running hot without letting the car/engine cool down I still had gains of at least 15-20 H.P. and a big increase in the torque and a more even torque curve.
Maybe mine is special odd one, but those numbers are kind of low, even for a 3.4L that I know of other peoples 3.4L Camaro/Firebird cars. At the crank of course it will be higher but my rear wheel H.P. and torque has always been high, especially with the electronic remote mount water pumpt engage/hooked up. The highest I have seen when my car is cool and everything is hook up(no turbo or supercharger, or nitrous) is around 225 H.P and 255-265 torque depending on the equiptment that is installed on the car at the rear wheels. Maybe my car is a freak or very unique but even some of my friends 3.4L have higher #'s then the ones you posted. It could be the right combination of parts and gears, and air conditions in my area but your numbers seem to be off. I would have them checked again.
The only programming I had was by the dealer after my car got hit and that was only to remove the speed limiter and a few other minor enhancments. Just in case your wondering. I would check your stats again and see if they come out the same.I also have around 120,000 miles. But I keep my car in great shape. I bought it with around 56,000 miles on it and I replaced a bunch of parts by my choice. See my sig for details. Any other questions then just post them for me or email me at skullcamaro@aol.com. Have fun

Dude, you're full of ****. There's no way in hell you put down 225rwhp and 255-265rwtq. Tiago with his turbo setup at 7psi only put down 260rwhp. Either your dyno's are off or you're lying. What track times does your car run? I can't see the timeslips page right now cause it's messed up. You either have a completely built up 3.4L or again, you're lying.---
-\'95 3.4L M5 Camaro

First off how the **** would you know what I have done to my car in the first place and second why don't you ask a question before you run your mouth about a topic. I've had it tested at two different shops 1 of which was at SLP the other at a GM performance dealership up near Reading, PA. I wasn't the orginal owner of the car so maybe things were changed before I got it, but it has always been fast. After the new intake and exhaust as well as the change in the water pump to electric and an Upgraded electrical system(alternator, battery, cables, etc). The auto Trans. doesn't change your performance that much that you would get large differences in H.P. and torque numbers. The previous owner was a doctor but who knows. I know I had a brand new transmission put in while my warranty was still on my car.
I've done quite a bit to my car. Every little bit counts towards an overall higher performance. Check my sigs for some of the things that I have done. I've done a bunch more that I haven't listed but I personally haven't rebuilt the engine. The GM repair/collision place did a lot of major work so they may have done some work without my knowledge, since the owner is a very good friend of mine and I know the dealerships owners kids.
Another thing is that I really don't care if you believe me or not. Just because my car is a factory freak or was modified before I owned it or after the accident. It really doesn't matter to me if you believe me or not. I never gave any timeslip or quarter mile times or anything of the sort so how would you know how fast my car is. H.P and torque doesn't neccessarily equate to speed. My car could be a fast start off the line or have a high top speed. In either case I don't need to justify anything to you. Try researching the topic before you mouth off on something that wasn't specifically mentioned. I was just pointing out what my numbers were relative to others and that those other numbers listed seemed very low and also that mileage doesn't neccesarilly mean anything depending on the up keep of the car.

Hp & Tq don't equate to speed huh? Please don't tell me to read up on the 3.4L either, I'm sure most here would back me up when I say that I know quite a bit about it. Go run some times at the track if you haven't already. If you have please list them. Even if you don't run an awesome ET, your MPH will tell all about how much hp you have. I didn't even notice you have an auto before. Now that I know that I KNOW you're full of ****.---
-\'95 3.4L M5 Camaro

225 hp?
that seems a little far fetched...
160 at the wheels I think its doable, unlikely on a auto but still possibly doable.
What electric waterpump do you have can you post a link or something? I was looking for one for a bit.
I will have to say its a little far fetched, but I still think its possible, what times do you pull?
also to correct you you do have mroe drivetrain loss in an AUTo over a manual tranny.
