the needle moves so much. to get the most correct reading, when should i read it? accelerating? parked on a flat surface? braking?

Speakin of gas gauges, why does the gas gauge drop so fast after like a 3/4 mark? I was so happy I had 150 gas saving pampered miles on 1/4 tank of gas but within 50 miles more miles it said i had barely half a tank.
