• Rear main seal already?

I got my oil changed yesterday and was told my rear main seal is leaking. I got a 2000 Firebird with 39k miles and I have only owned it for 6 months. I was told the harsh PA winter we had and the quick warm up of the engine on a cold day can do this, and that it may seal itself up over the summer. It was down a quart in 4k miles. Anybody else experience this? I really want to drag race it but now I am pretty worried.
ps: no warranty

The rear pinion seal. Happened to me with only 40K miles. Only about $75 at the dealership.

Not the pinion seal but the engine rear main seal. Now I have to carry around a quart of oil in what is to me pretty much a brand new car.

Mines been going on forever. It's one of those things you either just live with (like I do) or drop like a grand and get it fixed. I'd just live it if at all possible, it's notorious on our cars.

Yeah, its not a big deal, unless you are REALLY using oil, then you may want to get it fixed.

You said a quart in 4k miles. As in 4000 miles? Since you should be changing every 3000, unless you are running syn, its not a big deal. The majorty of cars, its within spec to use roughly an quart of oil per 3000 miles. So, you are just fine. This is why we check are oil. Oil is one of those things that engines use some up. Its normal to have the level go down.

Let me remind you, that 1 quart low, is where the dip stick says "Add".
Each dot on the dipstick equals 1/4 quart. If the level is somewhere between add and full, you are fine. Add is 1 quart low.

So..... yeah that was a long reply. Just wanted to let you know, that along as you check your oil regulary, you've got really got nothing to worry about.

I have the same EXACT problem. my car's only got 33k miles on it. this just started a few months ago. when some towel heads changed my oil. You have to remove the transmission to fix this problem- big bux. Luckly for me I still have the warrenty so it will only cost me $100 deductable

I have the same problem, Mine varies between 1-2 quarts ever 3k. Yes my motor has a personality, one time it'll be 1 quart, anothertime it'll be 2 quarts and I drive the same way. I dunno

I had to have my oil pan gasket and rear main seal replaced at 40K. Appears to be a common repair for our cars at around 40K.

I have an extended warranty on my car with a 0 deductible so it cost me nothing. However, my receipt showed that it would have cost around $625 if I didn't have the warranty.

Jesus... not sure I want my dad's car... any reason why its so bad, I am at 127k no rear main seal problems, pinion seal was a problem but its common on 10-bolts, espeically with crappy 2 piece driveshafts.

Getting the rear main seal fixed will only cost you about as much as getting your clutch replaced would. They will remove you tranny and flywheel, pop out the old seal, stick in the new one, and bolt everything back up. It's not going to cost you a million bucks.

$250 is about right.
