well I am sure the plug is bad anyway(cold start up is fine, but when a little heat gets into it, it mis fires really bad. got plugs and wires ready to put on once it cools off) but on the way home from the parts store I distinctly heard 4 metal clunks, at different times, all heard under acceleration. I am worried what it was. could the lifters hit the valve cover? could the valves somehow hit the pistons?

Lifter's can't hit the valve cover, but a rocker could if the bolt broke or something. If the valve hit the piston, you'd know it. If it was anything related to valvetrain, there's no reason it would do it a couple times then stop. Something would have to break to cause the noise, and it would keep on making noise.
Maybe just detonation from the bad plug?Matt
