I would get about 300 miles on a tank to E on my 97 v6 y87 a4
If you are getting bad gas mileage check your tire pressure first.
What octane fuel are you running? Computer is tuned for 87 if i remember correctly. Try a tank on that. If you get pinging go up one more grade.
You should not need super unleaded unless you are still pinging.
Running a higher slower burning octane will only cause carbon build up in your car because you will not be getting a CLEAN burn due to compression ratio etc etc on the v6.
Still getting bad gas mileage, it is time to change your plugs and wires.
If you changed plugs, did you change to the right kind of plug? Did you go from a cold plug to a hot plug? If so this is your problem.
The carmaker will select the right temperature plug for each car. Some cars with high-performance engines naturally generate more heat, so they need colder plugs. If the spark plug gets too hot, it could ignite the fuel before the spark fires; so it is important to stick with the right type of plug for your car.
Spark Timing
The ignition system on your car has to work in perfect concert with the rest of the engine. The goal is to ignite the fuel at exactly the right time so that the expanding gases can do the maximum amount of work. If the ignition system fires at the wrong time, power will fall and gas consumption and emissions can increase.
