I have a 98 3.8 Auto bird and just recently had to change this...

You're really not going to like this.

    1) Remove the starter heatshield
    2) Remove the starter
    3) Remove the left and right front transmission braces
    4) You can wedge a prybar into the flywheel
    5) Remove the Serpentine belt and airbox.
    6) Remove the crankshaft bolt
    7) Using a harmonic balancer, remove the crankshaft pulley.
    8) Remove the shield behind the crankshaft pulley.
    9) There's your sensor.

    For your 96...
    Try This

I don't know if a direct link will work, but:

****... how long and hard do you think the job is? i thought it was something pretty easy I could get to. I didn't know I had to do all that.

Actually in your car since it is a manual, you should be able to see the flywheel through two slots in the tranny.

Jam a screwdriver through the slot to hold the flywheel. Then it will only take about an hour to get everything off to get to the sensor.

The biggest part.... you MUST have a harmonic balancer puller. MUST! Autozone rents them for about $15 - Return it and they credit your account. Pep boys sells them for $15 if you want to go that route.

Putting that bolt back on is HARD. It needs to go to 110 ft/lbs plus 100 degrees. You can guestimate the degrees part, but you should have a torque wrench that goes from 0 - 200 ft/lbs or so.

Altogether... I'd say about 3 - 4 hours of work.

Yeah, it sounds worse than what it is. I bought the puller but for some reason I think I remember needing a longer bolt than the one that cam with it. Does that sound right to anyone else?
