3X reference pulses were not detected by PCM during cranking.

just pulled that code from my car today, not sure how long its been there, i havnt checked my codes in a while, recently the car has been idling at around 2000
i thought it was a clogged up IAC valve, but i cleaned the IAC out today and it still did the same thing, any thoughts?
the code sounds like a bad crank position sensor, but that shouldnt cause a high idle would it?
From Chilton The 3X Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor provides a signal to the PCM through the ignition control module. The PCM uses this signal to determine RPM and crankshaft position.
I don't know about the 3.4, but the CPS was a pain in the *** to change in my 3.8.
